NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (13-4, 5-0 OVC) wrapped up its trip to the Music City with a 6-1 victory over Belmont (9-7, 2-2 OVC) Saturday afternoon at the Belmont Tennis Complex.
With the victory, SEMO improved to 5-0 in Ohio Valley Conference competitions after its seventh-straight win in 2022.
The Redhawks took the doubles point with wins at the second and first slots to open the dual with the Bruins, the No. 3 selected team in the 2022 OVC Preseason poll.
Daniela Hlacikova and
Teona Velkoska dropped Somer Henry and Peyton Lee, 6-2, at the second flight before
Romana Tarajova and
Ksenia Shikanova edged Gina Feistel and Meredith Roberts, 6-4.
With the win, Hlacikova and Velkoska improved to 11-2 in duals in 2022 after their seventh-straight victory.
Tarajova and Shikanova also picked up their sixth-straight win for a 7-1 mark this season.
Myroslava Zelenchuk and
Vivian Lai's third doubles match went unfinished with the Redhawks pair leading Anastasiya Zholdakova and Abi Solomon, 5-2.
SEMO then won six of seven singles matches to seal the 6-1 victory over Belmont.
Velkoska defeated Lee, 6-3, 6-1, for her 10th win of the campaign (10-4) and fourth straight.
Lai then edged Meredith Roberts, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles to extend her win streak to seven matches (12-3 in 2022).
At the second slot, Hlacikova clawed past Henry, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to increase her record to 10-6 after her third-straight singles win.
The Bruins earned their lone point of the dual at the top position. Feistel, a 2022 OVC Preseason Selection, beat Tarajova, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
For Tarajova, the 2022 OVC Preseason Top Player, the loss was her first in league play this season (4-1 in OVC).
SEMO then closed out the match with wins at the third and fourth spots.
Shikanova fought past Zholdakova, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 3 before Zelenchuk overcame Solomon, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, at No. 4.
Shikanova improved to 12-5 in 2022 after her third-straight victory.
SEMO now has four singles players with double digit wins in Hlacikova (10-6), Lai (12-3), Shikanova (12-5), and Velkoska (10-4). Zelenchuk is one win away from 10 wins (9-6) in her first collegiate season.
SEMO wraps up the 2022 regular season April 15-16, against Murray State and Austin Peay at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. Both matches will begin at 1 p.m., CT in the Friday, Saturday matchup.
SEMO will then await its seeding for the 2022 OVC Championship Tournament April 29 through May 1 at the Wesselman Tennis Center in Evansville, Indiana.
