EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIU Edwardsville (16-30, 7-16) scored six runs in the fourth inning to key a 7-4 series-opening win over Southeast Missouri (24-20, 13-8) Saturday at Cougar Field.
SEMO was ahead, 2-1, after scoring twice in the top half of the inning.
Aubrie Shore had a RBI-double and
Paige Halliwill stole home to get the Redhawks their first lead of the game.
The Cougars, however, loaded the bases and answered with six runs, including four on a grand slam by Bailey Concatto to take a 7-2 advantage.
SEMO then added two more runs in the sixth, but it wasn't enough.
Kynzie Wrigley knocked in
Abigail Rickermann and Halliwill scored later in the inning to narrow SIUE's lead to 7-4.
Halliwill led the Redhawks with two hits and two runs scored. Rickermann also scored twice and had a walk.
Rachel Rook (14-9) was charged with the loss in relief. Rook gave up six runs on five hits, struc out eight and walked two in four innings.
Mia Haynes (7-15) went the distance for SIUE. Haynes allowed five hits and four runs, struck out one and walked two in seven innings.
The Cougars finished with 10 hits, as well.
SEMO and SIUE end their series with a 12 p.m., CT doubleheader Sunday.
