Redhawks Edge Arkansas State, 4-3, Wednesday for Fifth-Straight Victory

JONESBORO, Ark. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (6-3) overcame the Sun Belt's Arkansas State (4-7), 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the A-State Tennis Complex for the Redhawks fifth-straight victory in 2022. 
 
SEMO claimed the doubles point before securing the road dual win with three singles victories.
 
Daniela Hlacikova and Teona Velkoska, the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Doubles Team of the Week, defeated Yasmine Humbert and Sofia Vdovychenko, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles to open the midweek match. 
 
Hlacikova and Velkoska improved to 4-1 in 2022 after the win. 
 
SEMO then earned wins at the third and first slots to take a 1-0 lead heading into Wednesday's singles competition. 
 
Myroslava Zelenchuk and Vivian Lai beat Emily Surcey and Rebecca Brody, 6-3, at the final doubles position before Ksenia Shikanova and Romana Tarajova fought past Thea Rice and Nejla Zukic in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6).
 
With the dual moving to singles, Velkoska extended the SEMO advantage to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1, decision over Brody at No. 6 singles. 
 
The Redhawks then pushed their lead to 3-0 at the fifth slot when Lai bested Vdovychenko, 6-2, 6-3. 
 
The wins were both Velkoska and Lai's third-straight singles wins in 2022. 
 
The Red Wolves would then secure wins at the top two lineup spots to cut into the SEMO lead, 3-2. Surcey defeated Hlacikova, 6-2, 6-1, before Rice beat Tarajova, 6-1, 6-3, at the second and first positions, respectively.
 
Shikanova then sealed the dual win for SEMO with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Hunter Roper at No. 4. Then win was Shikanova's fifth-straight in 2022. 
 
Nejla Zukic beat Zelenchuk at third singles, 6-2, 5-2, via retirement to conclude the dual. 
 
SEMO next embarks on a trip to North Carolina for three matches over Spring Break. The Redhawks open the excursion with matches at Western Carolina on Sunday and at Montreat College on Monday, March 14. SEMO wraps up its trip to The Tar Heel State Thursday, March 17 at Gardner Webb in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
