BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (8-4) wrapped up its 2022 non-conference slate and North Carolina Spring Break Trip with a 4-3 victory over Gardner-Webb (4-6) Thursday at the Webb Tennis Complex.
SEMO swept all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point to open the dual Thursday.
Vivian Lai and
Myroslava Zelenchuk beat Katie Watts and Emilia Roslund, 6-4, at the third slot to open the competition.
SEMO then fought past the Runnin' Bulldogs at the second and first slots.
Daniela Hlacikova and
Teona Velkoska clawed past Teodora Ristic and Maria Jardim, 7-5, before
Romana Tarajova and
Ksenia Shikanova edged Manon Delsol and Elin Hellberg in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).
The win was Tarajova and Shikanova's fourth straight as a pairing.
Velkoska fell to Elise Semmartin, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6 singles to even the match at 1-1 when the dual switched to singles.
The Redhawks then increased their lead to 3-1 at the third and fourth slots.
Shikanova won her eighth match in a row, beating Jardim, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Zelenchuk then bested Hellberg, 6-3, 6-0.
GWU then tied the dual at 3-3 with wins at the second and first slots.
Delsol beat Hlacikova, 7-5, 6-4, before Ristic overcame Tarajova, 6-2, 7-5.
In the decisive fifth singles match, Lai fought past Roslund, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5, to seal the dual victory for SEMO.
The Redhawks conclude non-conference play with a mark of 8-4 heading into league competition.
SEMO will next begin Ohio Valley Conference play when they head to Charleston, Illinois, on Friday, March 25 to take on Eastern Illinois. First serve is slated for 2 p.m., CT.
SEMO, the 2021 OVC Regular-Season Champions, was selected to repeat and finish first in the league in 2022. EIU was pegged seventh in the preseason poll.
