CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri women's volleyball head coach
Julie Yankus announced Tuesday the addition of assistant coach
Maureen Johnson to the Redhawks staff.
"I'm excited to welcome MJ to the SEMO Volleyball Family," Yankus said of Johnson. "I expect that her years of collegiate coaching experience at various levels will bring our program new ideas and a fresh perspective. MJ will bring a lot of energy into the gym and relate personally with our players. I anticipate that her hometown connection to the Chicagoland area will also help us continue to recruit athletes from that area. I believe MJ will be an excellent addition to our coaching staff."
Johnson heads to SEMO after serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Western Illinois this past season in Macomb, Illinois. At Western Illinois, Johnson coached all aspects of the game with an emphasis on blocking and attacking.
She has also had coaching stops at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina, and Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. At Newberry, Johnson was also the recruiting coordinator.
Johnson has experience in coordinating team travel, monitoring academic progress of student-athletes, budgeting and managing social media.
Prior to Newberry and Marietta, she served as the Director of Volleyball Operations at Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Illinois. As director of operations for the Huskies, she was responsible for all the logistical plans for team travel including hotels, meals and transportation.
While at NIU, she earned her Master's in Sport Management in May 2018.
Johnson also has experience at the club level, having spent a year with the VC United Volleyball Club.
Prior to coaching, Johnson was a three-year starting middle blocker at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. The Crystal Lake, Illinois, native, made two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances with the Eagles. She paced Ashland with a team-high 73 total blocks in 2012.
Johnson graduated from Ashland in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
