CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (2-3) will host William Woods (2-4) of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) in its home-opening doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. Match times are set for 12 p.m., CT and 3 p.m. for SEMO's first home dual matches in 2022.
LAST TIME OUT
The Redhawks were last in action on Feb. 18 and 19 in Columbia, Missouri, where they faced Missouri and Central Arkansas.
Daniela Hlacikova and
Vivian Lai each registered singles wins Feb. 18 as SEMO dropped a 5-2 decision to Missouri of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) to open the weekend.
Hlacikova, a sophomore from Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, defeated Emelie Schwarte, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 Singles to even the dual at 1-1.
Lai, a junior from Taipei, Taiwan, fought past Valentina Vazquez, 5-7, 7-6, 10-5, at No. 5 singles to conclude the match.
SEMO then closed the weekend with its second win of the 2022 campaign, 4-3, over Central Arkansas on Feb. 19.
After dropping the doubles point,
Romana Tarajova,
Myroslava Zelenchuk,
Ksenia Shikanova and
Teona Velkoska all captured singles wins to seal SEMO's win.
Tarajova, the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year, defeated UCA's Chunxi Xin, 7-6 (7-3) and 6-1 at the top singles spot.
Zelenchuk (6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-1) picked up a point at No. 3 singles, defeating Yada Vasupongchai and Shikanova took down Sumomo Hamanaga 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
The Redhawks completed the dual win with a victory at the No. 6 singles position. Velkoska, a senior from Prilep, Macedonia, defeated Nicole Ross, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 to claim the victory.
Hlacikova leads the Redhawks in 2022 with a singles mark of 3-2. Lai, Shikanova, Tarajova and Zelenchuk have all registered two wins in singles competitions.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
William Woods, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), will be in Cape Girardeau Tuesday to take on SEMO at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
The Owls, who are ranked 16th in the NAIA, head into the dual with the Redhawks with a 2-4 record after downing McPherson College, 6-1, on Feb. 25 in Kansas City, Missouri.
William Woods took the doubles point with wins at the first and second positions. In No. 1 doubles, Ana Zavala and Rukshika Wijesooriya defeated Ortiz and Khoroshevskay, 6-2. Hanna Lindeboom and Marta Calvo Larraz then earned a 6-2 victory over Erica Paradise and Mundo, in No. 2 doubles.
The Owls then secured singles victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 slots.
Zavala played in the top position defeating Khoroshevskay 6-4, 6-1.
Wijesooriya took a 6-2, 6-0 win over Paradise in No. 2 singles. Lindeboom took down Mundo in the No. 4 spot with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. In No. 5 singles, Lilla Komiszar grabbed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ortiz. Hanna Meyer defeated Maples in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-2.
Zavala is 9-6 overall this season for the Owls at the top spot, while Wijesooriya sports a 7-4 mark.
The Owls previously fell at OVC opponent, SIUE, 7-0, Feb. 11 in Edwardsville, Illinois.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following the match on Tuesday, the Redhawks will play host to Bradley on Saturday. The dual is set to commence at 12 p.m., CT at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
