Redhawks Drop Five-Set Decision at Little Rock Tuesday to Split Regular-Season Series

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Three Redhawks finished with double-doubles including a triple-double from Kaelyn O'Brien as Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (11-11, 6-4 OVC) fell to Little Rock (5-18, 2-8 OVC) in five sets (25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 21-25, 12-15) Tuesday evening at the Jack Stephens Center.
 
O'Brien notched her first career triple-double, finishing with 11 kills, 19 assists, three blocks, and a career-best 15 digs. The Woodbridge, Virginia, setter, compiled the first triple-double for SEMO since Julie Shives posted the feat with 46 assists, 10 kills, and 10 digs against Murray State on Sept. 20, 2011.
 
Izzy Lukens and Tara Beilsmith also added double-doubles Tuesday. 
 
Lukens dished out 21 assists with 11 digs and three aces for her seventh double-double in 2022. 
 
Beilsmith, the three-time reigning Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week and NCAA digs leader, earned her first career double-double with 22 digs, a career-high 10 assists and an ace. 
 
Zoey Beasley led the Redhawks offensively with 17 kills, four digs, and three blocks while hitting .256. The senior from Paragould, Arkansas, competed in her home state of Arkansas for the first time as a collegiate student-athlete Tuesday. 
 
Trailing the match 2-0, Little Rock reeled off three-straight set wins to claim the reverse sweep and split the home-and-home regular-season series between the two travel partners. 
 
Tied in the match at 2-2, the Trojans opened the decisive fifth set with a 5-1 lead that grew to 9-3 as SEMO burned both of its timeouts. 
 
Little Rock hit a match high .313 in the final period Tuesday and finished with .198. 
 
SEMO then scored four-straight points to cut the edge to 10-8. After a Little Rock error, Kayla Closset knocked a pair of kills before a Lukens ace. 
 
Beasley added a pair of rally stoppers to keep the margin at two (12-10 and 13-11). She had four kills during the final set Tuesday on a .667 percentage. 
 
A Trojan miscue made it a one-point lead at 13-12 before Little Rock secured the match, 15-12, with a Nedima Kamberovic kill before notching a service ace.
 
Kamberovic led Little Rock in the fifth set with three kills (.400) and two aces. She finished with a team-high 15 kills, hitting .270 Tuesday. 
 
Down two sets, the Trojans clawed back into the match with a 25-20 third set. Trailing the third period, 20-16, Little Rock grabbed the stanza with nine-straight points to cut the Redhawk lead in the match to 2-1.  
 
In the fourth set, Little Rock opened with a 5-2 lead that swelled to 18-7 after an 8-1 run. 
 
Kills from Closset and Beasley cut the advantage to 23-19 and the Redhawks fended off set point twice, 24-21, before a Kamberovic kill (seven kills in the fourth set) sealed the set for Little Rock. 
 
Closset had five kills during the fourth set on a .556 percentage as SEMO attempted a comeback. 
 
The Redhawks hit a match high .255 in the first set and finished with .168. 
 
Little Rock opened the first set leading 5-3 and increased its advantage to 10-4 after a 5-0 rally. 
 
SEMO cut the early deficit to 11-9 after a 4-0 run before trimming the margin to one, 14-13. Beasley made her presence known during the sequence, securing a solo block before a pair of consecutive kills. 
 
Colby Greene then added a rally stopper to knot the set at 14-14. 
 
A kill from Addy McAleer followed by a rally stopper from Mackenzie Meehan and then a solo block by McAleer provided a slight 18-16 lead.
 
O'Brien added a winner followed by a Trojan error for set point at 24-20. Little Rock fended it off twice before another O'Brien kill.
 
O'Brien, a redshirt junior transfer from Virginia Commonwealth, had four kills in the opening set on a .500 clip while Beasley had five.
 
SEMO extended its lead in the match to 2-0 with a 25-20 second stanza. The Redhawks jumped out to a 7-2 lead that widened to 14-8 after a 5-0 run. 
 
Meehan and O'Brien then combined for consecutive kills to make the score 17-12. Closset placed an ace following a LR miscue to increase the margin to 21-15. 
 
SEMO then wrapped the set, 25-20, after an O'Brien kill. She had five in the second set on a .400 rate. 
 
Closset finished Tuesday with eight kills on a .375 hitting percentage with 13 digs and two aces. 
 
Greene chipped in six kills with three digs and two blocks. 
 
Meehan notched five kills with a team-high six blocks and two digs. Ramiri Gardner had four kills and a block.
 
McAleer grabbed a career best 13 digs with three kills and a block, starting at outside hitter for the Redhawks. 
 
Four Trojans finished in double-figures attacking. Laure Jansen (12 kills and 20 digs), Daria Burrows (11 kills) and Jeila Fullerton (11 kills and 12 digs) all hit the feat with Kamberovic. 
 
Gabrielle Spankus notched 39 assists and 17 digs while Jalynn Robinson added 20 assists and nine digs. 
 
Little Rock led SEMO in aces (12-6) and blocks (14-11) Tuesday.
 
SEMO next returns to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to host Tennessee Tech Friday and Saturday at Houck Field House. Match times are 6 p.m., CT and 2 p.m. in the series. Friday is Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Fans are encouraged to wear pink. Free water bottles will be given to fans while supplies last. Saturday is Alumni Day and the Redhawks volleyball team will recognize their alumni during the match. There will be an Alumni social gathering following the match ahead of SEMO's Annual Trivia Night and Charity Auction. Free fanny packs will also be given away to students while supplies last Saturday.
