CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (11-12, 6-5 OVC) fell to Tennessee Tech (10-12, 7-3 OVC), 3-1 (25-20, 30-28, 25-19, 25-19), in their Ohio Valley Conference series opener Friday evening at Houck Field House.
Zoey Beasley led the Redhawks attack with 16 kills, seven digs and four blocks. She notched five kills in each of the first two sets Friday and four in the final set.
SEMO took the opening set before the visiting Golden Eagles secured the win with three-straight set wins.
The Redhawks opened the first set with five-straight points and increased its advantage to 9-4 after a 4-0 run.
The Golden Eagles would then knot the frame at 11-11 with a 4-0 rally.
Colby Greene knocked a kill before a 5-0 run from TTU provided the Golden Eagles a slight 18-17 edge.
SEMO then claimed the opening set, 25-20, on an 8-2 run.
Kayla Closset opened the sequence with a kill before consecutive rally stoppers by Beasley.
Beasley added another kill before
Ramiri Gardner teamed up with Beasley and then
Kaelyn O'Brien for back-to-back blocks to bring the score to 24-19.
Gardner and O'Brien then teamed up once again for another block assist to seal the set.
SEMO jumped out to another early advantage in the second set, scoring the initial five points before increasing the margin to 9-3.
The marathon second stanza featured 13 ties and five lead changes before needing extra innings. SEMO hit a match best .189.
Kills from Greene and Closset provided the Redhawks slight leads of 20-19 and then 21-20.
The Golden Eagles then rallied off four-straight points for set point at 24-21.
SEMO would fend off set point and knot the frame at 24-24 after a kill by
Avery Torrey coupled with a TTU error and a Gardner rally stopper.
Torrey finished Friday with a career-best three digs and a kill.
Beasley added a kill before an O'Brien service ace to put the Redhawks ahead 26-25.
Closset would keep the SEMO lead at one, 28-27, with another kill before Tech evened the match at 1-1 with three-straight points, 30-28.
The Golden Eagles then notched a match-high .344 in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
With the Redhawks leading 13-11, TTU would rally off six-straight points to take a 17-13 advantage.
The Golden Eagles would add another 5-0 run to widen the gap to 22-14.
Greene slammed a pair of kills to bookend a pair of
Rachel Eddy aces to trim the deficit to 22-18.
Eddy, a junior transfer defensive specialist from Dubuque, Iowa, notched a career best two aces and two digs in her fifth career match as a Redhawk.
SEMO would then come as close as 23-19 after a TTU miscue before consecutive kills from Madolyn Isringhausen wrapped the period in favor of Tech.
The Golden Eagles then hit the fourth frame with a 6-1 lead that SEMO cut to 7-6 after a kill by Beasley to go with a TTU error.
Tennessee Tech would then regrow its advantage to 19-13 which prompted a SEMO timeout.
Kills from Isringhausen and Taylor Dorsey then secured the victory for TTU at 25-19.
Closset chipped in eight kills with 14 digs and a block. Greene finished with seven rally stoppers, six digs and two blocks.
Izzy Lukens compiled a double-double of 18 assists with 11 digs. O'Brien added 15 assists and seven digs with six kills, four blocks and two aces.
Tara Beilsmith, the reigning back-to-back-to-back OVC Defensive Player of the Week, had a match high 19 digs to go with eight assists and an ace. She is now 16 digs away from 2,000 in her career at SEMO.
Addy McAleer scooped up six digs with an ace.
Gardner matched a career-best six blocks with four kills and three digs.
Mackenzie Meehan finished with four blocks and three kills.
Taylor Beasley played in two sets Friday, registering a dig in her fourth match as a Redhawk.
Isringhausen led TTU with 17 kills and 13 digs while Dorsey chipped in 10 kills and seven blocks.
Jordan Karlen finished with a match-high 39 assists and seven digs. Brooke Amann grabbed 18 digs followed by McKenna Young (17 digs).
SEMO had a slight edge in aces (8-7) while TTU led blocks, 15-12.
The Redhawks will conclude their home OVC series with Tennessee Tech Saturday afternoon at Houck Field House. First serve is 2 p.m., CT.
Saturday, students will receive a free fanny pack compliments of Legends Cape Girardeau, while supplies last. Saturday is also Alumni Day. The Redhawks will honor their alumni during the match and will host a social gathering at the conclusion of the match before the seventh annual SEMO Trivia Night & Charity Auction, presented by The Bank of Missouri.
