OVC Preseason Favorite Belmont Deals Redhawks Sixth Road Loss

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Eric Reed, Jr. scored 22 point, Nana Akenten added 16 off the bench and Sam Thompson pitched in 10 as Southeast Missouri (6-10, 1-2) fell to Ohio Valley Conference preseason favorite Belmont (11-3, 1-0), 102-62, Thursday night.

Five days after dropping a career-best 34 points vs. Austin Peay, Reed, Jr. gave SEMO a nice start. Reed, Jr. made his first four 3-pointers and ended up with six to go along with all of his points in the first half.

But, the rest of his teammates accounted for a combined 11 points and that wasn't enough to keep the Redhawks in the game.

After DQ Nicholas made a layup to put SEMO ahead, 23-21, BU immediately seized control and never let up.

The Bruins responded with a 16-0 run while the Redhawks missed six-straight field goals until Nicholas' jumper with a little under seven minutes left.

BU went on to outscore SEMO, 29-5, in a nine-minute stretch and, as a result, ran their lead to 57-33 at the intermission.

The Redhawks shot 70 percent (7-of-10) in the early going, but fell below 40 percent (39.3) by the end of the first half. Meanwhile, BU countered with a blazing 65.7 percent (23-of-35) clip from the floor.

The Bruins kept the pedal down in the second half and led by as many as 46 before putting their 11th win on ice.

BU, which held Reed, Jr. scoreless in the second half, put four of its five starters in double figures. Nick Muszynski and Will Richard each finished with 17 points, Ben Sheppard had 16 and Grayson Murphy added 13 points and four assists.

The Bruins outrebounded SEMO, 41-29, and shot 60 percent (42-of-70) for the night.

Reed, Jr. ended up shooting 6-of-11 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line. All of Reed, Jr.'s field goals were threes. Thompson made 5-of-8 shots en route to his second double-digit scoring game of the year. Akenten, who nailed five 3-pointers, reached a season-high in points.

SEMO returns to action at Tennessee State Saturday.
