Patterson Adds Pair of Assistants in Midlick and Jenkins

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri Head Coach Rekha Patterson announced Thursday the addition of assistant coaches David Midlick and Carolyn Jenkins to the women's basketball staff.

Midlick heads to Cape Girardeau after leading the Austin Peay women's basketball team while Jenkins joins the Redhawks after serving as the associate head women's basketball coach at Kansas Wesleyan.

Midlick guided the Governors to six-consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Tournament appearances from 2015 to 2021. In his six seasons at the helm in Clarksville, Tennessee, Midlick coached five All-OVC players, including 2016-17 Player of the Year, Tearra Banks.

"I am thrilled that Coach Midlick chose to join our staff," Patterson said of Midlick. "His experience coaching in our league and recruiting our area will help us continue with our mission of identifying, recruiting and developing talented young women.  Having a former successful head coach will benefit many areas of our program."

"I truly appreciate Coach Patterson giving me the opportunity to work with her, the staff, and the players to continue to build a great program," Midlick said of joining the SEMO coaching staff. "I admire her dedication to wanting her student-athletes to be their best on and off the court.  I'm looking forward to getting to work with everyone associated with the women's basketball program and all of SEMO athletics."

Midlick led the Governors to 18 regular season wins in 2019-20, which is the most regular-season wins in program history since the 2003-04 team won 20 regular-season games.

Midlick's Governors broke the Austin Peay single-season team three-point record twice. The 2019-20 squad buried a program record 267 three pointers, which led the OVC and ranked 14th nationally.

Prior to leading the APSU women's basketball team, Midlick served as the associate head coach at Memphis and the head coach at Delta State. He also was an assistant coach at Tennessee State and had prior coaching stints with both the men's and women's programs at Austin Peay.

Midlick has also coached at the high school level and was a highly successful physical therapist before he pivoted to basketball.

He graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor's degree in Biological Science in 1991 and earned his Bachelor's in Physical Therapy from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1994.

As a player, Midlick was a three-year letter winner at Ole Miss under head coach Ed Murphy from 1988-91. The Rebels played in the NIT in 1989 – with Midlick leading the team in free-throw percentage and three-point field goal percentage – and were Southeastern Conference tournament finalists in 1990.

He comes to Cape with his wife Leslie. The couple has two sons, David Jr., 24 and Will, 21.

Midlick is the second former OVC coach to join Patterson's 2021-22 staff after former UT Martin assistant Jasmine Newsome was hired on June 2 as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

In her seven seasons at Kansas Wesleyan, Jenkins assisted with the varsity, worked exclusively with the post players and was the head coach of the junior varsity team. As the associate head coach, she helped the Coyotes compile a record of 120-81 with four 20-win seasons.

"Carolyn's playing and coaching experience will have an immediate impact on our program, especially with our post players," Patterson said of Jenkins. "Her knowledge and ability to teach and connect with our players will assist them in fully developing on and off the court."

""I feel blessed and extremely grateful for the opportunity to coach alongside Coach Patterson here at SEMO," Jenkins said. "Her passion for the players and staff on and off the court is evident. I am excited to join and contribute to the championship culture in the women's basketball program, as well as the entire athletics department. Coach P and the entire staff are proven winners and I cannot wait to get to work with them."

With head coach Ryan Showman, Jenkins coached KWU in 2019-20 to its first outright Kansas Conference title and a first-round win in the NAIA Division II National Championship before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the rest of the event. The 2019-20 squad posted a program-best 21-3 record in conference play and had a 26-6 overall record.

Most recently, Jenkins helped guide the Coyotes to the KCAC Semifinals in 2020-21 as Kentucky Wesleyan finished with a mark of 16-11.

Jenkins helped coached 22 All-KCAC players including 2019-20 KCAC Newcomer of the Year and third-team NAIA All-American Kelcey Hinz.

Jenkins has also been a part of two NAIA Scholar-Teams and WBCA Academic Top 25 teams.

Prior to joining the Coyotes coaching staff, Jenkins played professionally overseas in Bulgaria and France and had a tryout with the former San Antonio Stars of the WNBA.

Jenkins graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Applied Behavioral Science and a minor in Sociology in 2013 from The University of Kansas.

She was a four-year player for KU, who scored more than 1,700 points and grabbed over 700 rebounds leading the Jayhawks to back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. She was recognized as one of the top five centers in the country, as well as an All-American and her efforts landed her a spot on the KU Women's Basketball All-Decade Team.

Jenkins earned her Master of Business Administration from KWU in 2016.  She will be joined in Cape by her husband, Jeff, and her two children: Aiden, 5, and Jiren, 1
