CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's (10-4, 3-0 OVC) extended its win streak to six matches after it impeached the Austin Peay Governors (5-3, 0-2 OVC), 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
SEMO stayed perfect in conference play, beating the 2021 preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference favorite Friday.
The Redhawks won the doubles point in their sixth-straight match to open the dual with the Governors. SEMO captured decisions at the third and first slots.
Daniela Hlacikova and
Teona Velkoska eased past Ana Albertson and Aleks Topalovic, 6-1, before
Romana Tarajova and
Kseniya Zonova bested Danielle Morris and Jana Leder, 6-2.
Hlacikova and Velkoska improved to 5-0 in 2021 and 4-0 at the no. 3 position. For Tarajova and Zonova, the win at the top spot increased their win streak to four.
SEMO pushed its lead in the dual to 2-0 with a win at the second singles lineup spot. Hlacikova (11-1) won her team-best 11th match of the campaign when she defeated Morris, 6-2, 6-1.
Austin Peay then cut the Redhawks advantage to 2-1 when Leder beat Zonova, 6-1, 6-4, at no. 3 singles.
SEMO then secured wins at three of the final four slots to capture the dual victory.
Vivian Lai bested Martina Paladini-Jennings, 6-4, 6-1, before
Ksenia Shikanova outlasted Topalovic, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The win was Lai's sixth straight.
Honoka Nakanishi defeated
Lera Valeeva, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, at no. 6 singles.
Tarajova then improved to 9-3 in 2021 with her fifth consecutive singles win. Tarajova beat Fabienne Schmidt, the 2021 OVC Preseason Top Player and reigning OVC Player of the Week, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to seal the victory for SEMO.
The Redhawks will next take on Murray State Wednesday at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. SEMO was originally scheduled to face the Racers Saturday but the match was rescheduled due to COVID-19 protocols at Murray State.
