RICHMOND, Ky. – Lauren Welker scored her fourth goal of the 2020-21 season as Southeast Missouri women's soccer (5-1-1, 5-1-1 OVC) fell to Eastern Kentucky (3-4-0, 3-4-0 OVC), 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the EKU Soccer Field.
Welker drew a foul before converting a penalty kick in the sixth minute of regulation. With the goal, Welker has now notched a team-high four goals this season.
Welker led the Redhawks with three shots Saturday.
Eastern Kentucky then responded with consecutive goals for its third win of the season. Maddy Lemery knotted the contest at 1-1 in the 28th minute of play.
Katie Shaffer then headed in the Colonels game-winner in the 64th minute off a free kick.
SEMO looked to equalize in the waning moments of the regulation, drawing a corner kick in the 88th minute.
Morgan McCourt and
Emily Holten both notched shots on net but Billie Clark was there for a pair of saves during the sequence.
Hannah Compernolle tallied a pair of shots in the game. Holten, McCourt,
Kiana Khedoo and
Faith Liljegren each registered shots on goal.
Emma Brune,
Lexie Hacker and
Natalie Jackson all played in the full 90 minutes of regulation.
Kayla Byrd made her second-consecutive start at forward.
Goalkeeper
Bailey Redden made five saves in the loss. Her counterpart, Clark had six saves, allowing just one goal.
Eastern Kentucky outshot SEMO, 16-12, but shots on goal finished tied at 7-7. The Colonels compiled 11 shots in the final 45 minutes of the contest.
The loss was SEMO's first of the 2020-21 campaign.
The Redhawks complete their trip to the Bluegrass State Monday against Morehead State in Morehead, Kentucky. First kick is set for 2 p.m., CT.
