Redhawks Fall to #8 Jacksonville State, 21-3

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Southeast Missouri (1-4, 1-2) finished with a season-low 144 yards of total offense in a 21-3 loss to Ohio Valley Conference co-leader and #8 Jacksonville State (7-1, 4-0) Sunday afternoon at Burgess-Snow Field.

SEMO went four quarters without a touchdown against the OVC's top scoring and second-best total defense.

JSU marched 75 yards on nine plays and scored on the opening drive of the game to take an early lead. Zion Webb's 9-yard touchdown run capped the drive to put the Gamecocks ahead, 7-0, 4:20 into the contest.

The Redhawks got on the board when Kenny Doak kicked a 33-yard field goal to finish off an 11-play, 41-yard drive making it a 7-3 contest with 2:44 remaining in the first quarter.

After a 51-yard punt by Zach Haynes, the Gamecocks took over on downs at its own 18-yard line early in the second quarter. Nine plays and 82 yards later, JSU extended its lead to 14-3 on Uriah West's 5-yard touchdown run. West ran for 43 yards on six carries during that drive.

SEMO went three-and-out on two of its final three possessions of the first half and trailed, 14-3, at the intermission. The Redhawks also had just 34 yards on 25 plays in the game's first 30 minutes.

Izeal Terrell intercepted Zion Webb's pass and ran eight yards to JSU's 42-yard line giving the Redhawks excellent field position with 7:29 left to play in the third quarter. SEMO managed to get to the Gamecocks' 22-yard line before Doak's 39-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.

On JSU's ensuing possession, Webb completed a 54-yard touchdown pass to Josh Samuel on a third-and-2 to stretch the Gamecocks lead to 21-3 at the 1:44 mark.

Andrew Bunch threw 120 yards on 20-of-37 passes and Zack Smith had a game-high eight receptions for 51 yards. Smith's eight catches were also a career best. Geno Hess ran for 38 yards on 13 carries, as well.

Defensively, Brandon Mincey finished with a career-high 11 tackles. Mike Matthews followed with nine tackles and Terrell posted his second interception of the season.

Webb completed 11-of-19 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 53 yards and another score to pace JSU. West ran for 71 yards and a touchdown as the Gamecocks outrushed SEMO, 184-24.
