Redhawks Clash with Austin Peay Sunday and Monday in Showdown of OVC Powers
Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (8-2, 8-2 OVC) will battle with Austin Peay (8-2, 8-2 OVC) Sunday and Monday at Houck Field House in a clash for third place in the Ohio Valley Conference. Sunday's match is set for 7 p.m., CT and first service for Monday's contest is scheduled for 3 p.m., CT.

Scouting the Governors
Austin Peay (8-2, 8-2 OVC) enters the matchup with a four-match win streak in hand and is tied with the Redhawks for third in the Ohio Valley Conference. In their win streak, the Governors have beat EIU twice (3-1 each) in Charleston, Illinois, Feb. 28 and March 1. They most recently edged Murray State by scores of 3-1 and 3-0, March 7 and 8 in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Series History
SEMO leads the all-time series with Austin Peay, 37-32, and won both matchups in five sets in 2019.
 
The Redhawks most recently prevailed over the Governors in five sets (25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 17-25, 15-12) on Nov. 7, 2019 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to complete the regular-season sweep of Austin Peay. SEMO had previously last beat the Governors twice in the regular season in 2011.
 
Maggie Adams paced the Redhawks with a career-best 16-kill outing on a .355 hitting clip while Laney Malloy notched a double-double of 13 kills and 18 digs. Mikayla Kuhlmann chipped in 12 kills (.243) while Krista Berns had seven and Annie Wehrheim finished with six. Claire Ochs handed out 47 assists with 12 digs for the double-double performance. Tara Beilsmith led the defense with 24 digs.
 
About Last Week
SEMO extended its win streak to eight matches with a pair of 3-0 sweeps of UT Martin in Martin, Tennessee, on March 7 and 8. The Redhawks did not drop a set over the two matches at UT Martin. It was also SEMO's fourth series sweep of the 2020-21 season. SEMO has now 3-0 swept its last three matches dating back to Monday, March 1 against SIUE.
 
Laney Malloy led the Redhawks attack with 27 kills and 18 digs. Malloy opened the week with a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs before tallying 13 kills and eight digs on a .333 hitting clip in the series finale. Malloy also finished the week with four assists, two service aces and three blocks. She leads the Redhawks in 2020-21 with 149 kills (4.14 kills/set) and is second on SEMO with 111 digs (3.08 digs/set).
 
Malloy ranks third in the OVC for kills per set and points per set (4.61). She also is first in the conference with 12.00 attacks per set.
 
Tara Beilsmith paced the SEMO defense and posted 18 digs in the series opener before finishing the week with 15 in the finale. Beilsmith also added six assists and an ace. She was perfect in serve-receive, committing no reception errors. Beilsmith paces the SEMO back row with 163 digs (4.53 digs/set, fifth in the OVC), which is fourth in the OVC.
 
Claire Ochs ran the Redhawks offense this past week at UTM, dishing out 62 assists with 21 digs over the series sweep. Ochs opened the week with a double-double of 34 assists and 13 digs on March 7. She then followed that match with 28 assists and eight digs as SEMO hit a season-high .374 on March 8. Ochs also had five kills, three service aces and six block assists over the two matches. She leads the team this campaign with 376 assists (10.44 assists/set, third in the OVC) with 91 digs (2.53 digs/set).

The Beas Knees
Sophomore Zoey Beasley matched a career-high 17 kills Feb 28 against SIUE, finishing with a .389 hitting clip, for her third-straight double-digit kill match.
 
She has registered double-digit kill matches in five of the last six SEMO matches. Beasley had 10 and seven in the two matches most recently at UTM on March 7 and 8.
 
Beasley is third on the team with 90 kills (2.81 kills/set).
  
Greene is our Favorite Color After Red
Colby Greene has registered double-digit kills in two of the last four matches. She most recently posted 12 and seven in the two matches at UTM on March 7 and 8. Greene is second on the Redhawks with 105 kills (2.92 kills/set) this season.
 
Adams with the Block
Senior Maggie Adams is first in the OVC with 1.17 blocks per set and 42 total blocks. She has registered 3.0 total blocks or more in the past eight SEMO matches.
 
Talia Gouard is second on the team with 32.0 total blocks (0.89 blocks/set, 11th in the OVC) and Colby Greene has posted 25.0 (0.69 blocks/set).
 
Offensively, Adams has posted 30 kills (0.73 kills/set) thus far.
 
Block Party!!
SEMO ranks third in the OVC with 79.0 total blocks. The Redhawks most recently registered eight in both matches at UTM and prior to that 10.0 in each match against SIUE.
 
SEMO ACE!!
SEMO ranks second in the conference with 1.78 aces per set and 64 total team aces this season.
 
Ally Dion paces the Redhawks with 0.42 aces per set (15 aces), which puts her fifth in the league. Claire Ochs is second on SEMO with 12 (0.33 aces/set) while Tara Beilsmith (0.28 aces/set) and Kayla Closset (0.3 6 aces/set) each have 10. Laney Malloy has chipped in nine (0.25 aces/set) and Izzy Lukens has five (0.16 aces/set). 
 
SEMO most recently matched a season-high of 11 at UT Martin on March 8.
 
2020-21 OVC Preseason Poll
Four Redhawks were featured on the 2020-21 Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference team as the Redhawks were selected to finish first in the preseason poll. SEMO, the 2019 OVC Tournament Champions, earned 10 first place votes and 222 total votes in the predicted order of finish that was selected by OVC Head Volleyball Coaches and Sports Information Directors.
 
The Redhawks also had a league-best four players selected to the 2020-21 Preseason All-OVC volleyball team in middle blocker Maggie Adams, libero Tara Beilsmith, outside hitter Laney Malloy and setter Claire Ochs. All four were named to 2019 All-OVC Teams.
 
2019 OVC Tournament Champions
The #2-seeded Southeast Missouri women's volleyball team swept #4 Morehead State, 26-24, 25-19, 28-26, at the Pete Mathews Coliseum to capture the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship on Nov. 23, 2019. The title was the sixth for SEMO and first since 2006. With the victory, SEMO earned an automatic qualification to the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship where it faced #9-ranked Kentucky on Dec. 6, 2019.
 
SEMO also matched the 2000 Redhawks that totaled 23 wins (23-9, 16-0 OVC) with the victory on Nov. 23, 2019. Laney Malloy, Mikayla Kuhlmann and Claire Ochs were each named to the 2019 OVC All-Tournament Team. Ochs was selected as the tournament MVP. The trio is the first Redhawks awarded OVC All-Tournament Team honors since Colleen Yarber garnered the distinction in 2012.
 
Malloy led the Redhawks offense with 16 kills and 10 digs for the double-double on a .267. Kuhlmann chipped in 12 on a .417 hitting clip. Annie Wehrheim finished with seven kills (.300) and Maggie Adams had five kills and four total blocks. Ochs dished out 32 assists with eight digs and five kills. Tara Beilsmith led the SEMO defense with a match-high 18 digs.
 
SEMO concluded the 2019 campaign with a 23-11 record, finishing 12-4 in OVC play (second in the regular season).
 
Team Makeup
SEMO returns 12 players from the 2019 OVC Tournament Championship team. The 2020-21 Redhawks team features seven upperclassmen including Maggie Adams, Laney Malloy and Claire Ochs who were all starters and All-OVC performers in 2019. SEMO also returns its All-OVC libero in sophomore Tara Beilsmith.
 
There are also six newcomers on the 2020-21 squad including Radford sophomore transfer Mackenzie Meehan and freshmen Addy McAleer, Nwakaego Nwagbuo, Izzy Lukens, Lexie Smith and Kayla Closset.
 
Looking Ahead
After Sunday and Monday's matches against Austin Peay, the Redhawks will head to Charleston, Illinois, to face Eastern Illinois March 21 and 22. SEMO will wrap up their 2020-21 regular season March 28 and 29 at home at Houck Field House against Murray State.
