Redhawks Welcome Austin Peay to Cape Girardeau Friday to Continue 2020-21 Campaign
Southeast Missouri women's soccer (2-0-0, 2-0-0 OVC) hosts Austin Peay (1-2-0, 1-2-0 OVC) Friday evening to continue its 2020-21 season. First kick is set for 6 p.m., CT at Houck Field.

Series History
SEMO leads the all-time series with Austin Peay, 12-6-4. The Redhawks have won the last three clashes with the Governors, all 2-1 affairs.
 
The Redhawks won the most recent meeting on Sept. 27, 2019 in Clarksville, Tennessee. Esmie Gonzales scored the game-winning goal in the 68th minute to send SEMO to a 2-1 victory over Austin Peay at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. Cassidi Tomsu provided SEMO a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. Rachel Bradberry then tied the game in the 63rd minute.
 
Scouting the Governors
Austin Peay has fashioned a 1-2-0 mark thus far in the early 2020-21 season. The Governors fell to Tennessee Tech in their season opener, 1-0, on March 2 and then dropped a 3-2 decision at SIUE on March 5.
 
APSU most recently overcame Jacksonville State, 4-3, in double overtime on Tuesday. After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the two institutions erupted for three goals apiece in the second half to force extra time. In the 103rd minute of double overtime, freshman Isabel Petre found Ashley Whittaker streaking down the sideline and Whittaker beat Aneesa O'Brien to secure a 4-3 win for the Governors, Tuesday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
 
Austin Peay was pegged to finish the 2020-21 season fifth in the OVC.
 
Belmont Recap
Lauren Welker netted her second goal in as many games to boost SEMO past 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Champion Belmont (1-2-0, 1-2-0 OVC), 1-0, Tuesday evening at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville, Tennessee.
 
Sarah Doyle stopped Morgan McCourt's penalty kick but Welker was there to clean up the rebound and post her second career goal as a Redhawk.
 
Goalkeeper Bailey Redden picked up her second-straight win of the 2020-21 campaign, playing in all 90 minutes in the shutout.
 
SEMO outshot the Bruins, 6-4, with five on goal. After 45 minutes of play, shots were tied at 1-1 in the Music City. Abby Tremain led all players Tuesday with two shots and one on net. Hannah Compernolle, Nadiia Ivanchenko and Morgan McCourt each tallied a shot in the win.
 
Freshman Kiana Khedoo made her first career start as a Redhawk.
 
I'm Welking (Welker) on Sunshine
Lauren Welker has notched her first two career goals as a Redhawk in both of SEMO's victories in the 2020-21 season.
 
Welker, a junior midfielder from Jackson, Missouri, has two scores on three shots on goal this season and has competed in 155 minutes.
 
About our Home Opener
SEMO beat Jacksonville State, 3-1, March 12 at Houck Field to secure its first victory of the 2020-21 season. Lauren Welker, Kiana Khedoo and Kate Daus all tallied their first career goals in the victory. Lexie Hacker tallied an assist on Welker's score.
 
Nadiia Ivanchenko, a Lviv, Ukraine native, made her first career start and finished with an assist and three shots (two on goal). She leads the team with four shots this season and three on net.
 
Morgan McCourt added a pair of shots in the win.
 
Keeper Bailey Redden competed in the full 90 minutes and made five saves for the win.
 
BRUNE!!
Freshman Emma Brune, a Saxony Lutheran graduate, made her first career start March 12 against JSU and has started in both games this season. Brune is the eighth member of her family to compete athletically for SEMO athletics.

Midfielder Emma Brune and defenders Lexie Hacker and Natalie Jackson have all played in the full 90 minutes over the first two Redhawk contests this season.
 
Hacker tallied an assist in SEMO's home opener on March 5.
 
SEMO Debuts
Gabby Gscheidmeier, a redshirt freshman from Germantown, Wisconsin, made her SEMO debut Tuesday at Belmont.
 
Maddie Paulson and Faith Liljegren also both made their Redhawk debuts in the win over Jacksonville State on March 5.
 
OVC Preseason Poll
SEMO, the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Regular-Season Champions, were picked to finish the 2020-21 season second in the OVC. Forward Megan Heisserer was named to the 2020-21 OVC Players Watch List.
 
The Redhawks received seven first-place votes and 172 points in the projected order of finish for second behind Murray State (181 points, five first-place votes).
 
Heisserer, a sophomore from Scott City, Missouri, was named to her first career OVC preseason team. The Notre Dame High School alum, played in all 17 games during her inaugural collegiate season, starting in eight. Heisserer tallied four goals and two assists for 10 points last season including a pair of game-winning goals. She was third on the team with 30 shots.
 
2019 OVC Regular-Season Champs Recap
The 2019 Redhawks fashioned an 11-5-1 mark, tallying a record of 8-1-1 in conference play to win their sixth OVC regular-season crown in program history and first outright title since 2011.
 
SEMO was undefeated at home with a 7-0 record at Houck Field in 2019 and entered the 2019 OVC Tournament with a mark of 6-0-1. Head Coach Heather Nelson was awarded her fifth OVC Coach of the Year honor in 2019.
 
Roster Breakdown
The 2020-21 roster features 22 student-athletes including 15 players from the 2019 OVC Regular-Season Championship team. Emily Holten, Lexi Grote, Hannah Compernolle, Lexie Hacker and Kayla Byrd return for their senior seasons.
 
Junior Bailey Redden returns in net and started 16 games in 2019. Redden made 90 saves and posted four shutouts, compiling a 9-0-1 mark.
 
Megan Heisserer was the fourth leading scorer in 2019 with four goals. Kennedy Jones chipped in a pair last season. Grote and Morgan McCourt each had one.
 
Freshmen Emma Brune, Nadiia Ivanchenko, Kiana Khedoo, Maddie Paulson, Laura Galindo Mejia, Faith Liljegren and sophomore transfer Taylor Nelson are the newcomers on the squad. Nelson is the daughter of head coach Heather Nelson and associate head coach Paul Nelson.
 
Looking Ahead
After Friday's home game with Austin Peay, the Redhawks head to Charleston, Illinois, for a matchup against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday, March 16. Initial kick is slated for 2 p.m., CT at Lakeside Field.
