Redhawks Fall in Season Opener at Jacksonville State Sunday

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (0-1, 0-1 OVC) fell to Jacksonville State (1-0, 1-0 OVC), in four sets (20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 16-25) Sunday in SEMO's season opener at the Pete Mathews Coliseum.
 
Laney Malloy led the Redhawks attack with 14 kills and nine digs Sunday. Zoey Beasley notched a personal-best nine kills on a .467 hitting percentage. Colby Greene added seven kills.
 
Claire Ochs ran the offense, finishing with 34 assists as SEMO finished the match with a .183 hitting clip. She also had three service aces.
 
Libero Tara Beilsmith paced the Redhawks defensively with 22 blocks.
 
Trailing 2-0 in the match, SEMO forced a fourth set with a 25-20 third frame. The Redhawks connected on a .444 rate, committing just three errors.
 
Malloy placed a service ace to push SEMO's third set lead to 11-8 before JSU responded with a 4-0 run.
 
Ally Dion added an ace to cap a 4-0 rally for a 16-13 edge. She concluded the match with two aces and seven digs.
 
Beasley and Maggie Adams posted consecutive kills to increase the lead to 24-17.
 
After three straight points by the Gamecocks, Malloy blasted a kill to grab the set for SEMO, 25-20.
 
JSU secured the win with a 25-16 fourth set.
 
Freshman Addy McAleer made her first career start as a Redhawk Sunday, finishing with two kills and a dig. Izzy Lukens also made her SEMO debut.
 
Adams paced the Redhawks with five blocks as the SEMO finished with seven as a team. Greene added two block assists.
 
The Gamecocks concluded the game, hitting .219 behind a .385 third frame.
 
JSU also had 13 aces compared to SEMO's seven.
 
Lena Kindermann compiled 13 kills and Courtney Glotzbach chipped in 11.
 
SEMO will face Jacksonville State again on Monday to wrap up their opening week First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m., CT.
