Redhawks Drop Tight Contest to Jacksonville State Monday in Series Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Colby Greene registered 15 kills and Laney Malloy added 14 as Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (0-2, 0-2 OVC) fell to Jacksonville State (2-0, 2-0 OVC), 25-20, 25-22, 25-22, Monday afternoon at the Pete Mathews Coliseum.
 
Making her second consecutive start, Greene paced the Redhawks with 15 kills on a .324 hitting clip.
 
Malloy tallied 14 kills for the second-straight match and added nine digs.
 
Setter Claire Ochs recorded her first double-double of the campaign and 37th in her career with 36 assists and 12 digs Monday. She also posted five kills.
 
JSU jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set before SEMO pulled within a point after consecutive kills from Maggie Adams and Greene.
 
A winner from Courtney Glotzbach pushed the Gamecock margin to 15-10. Sadie Brown added a kill to make the score 18-12 and prompt a Redhawks timeout.
 
With the scoreboard reading 24-16, SEMO fended off four set points before the Gamecocks closed the set with a kill from Katie Montgomery.
 
SEMO hit at a pace of .313 in the first set compared to JSU's match-high .519 clip.
 
The Gamecocks extended their lead in the match to 2-0 with a 25-22 second frame.
 
A 4-0 run from the Redhawks gave SEMO a 12-7 lead in the middle set. Zoey Beasley then slammed a kill to make the advantage 15-12.
 
Beasley finished with six kills to lead the Redhawks off the bench.
 
Kills from Brown, Lena Kindermann along with a block by the Gamecock duo evened the set at 15-15.
 
Greene connected with a kill before JSU pulled ahead 19-17. Malloy then tallied a winner to tie the set at 20-20.
 
Ochs elected for a kill instead of an assist as SEMO came as close as 23-22 before consecutive kills from Brown and Glotzbach sealed the set.
 
Both SEMO and the Gamecocks finished the second set at .341 hitting-wise.
 
JSU then earned the season-opening sweep with a 25-22 third frame. The Gamecocks grew their advantage to 18-13 after a 4-0 rally. A kill from Glotzbach extended the margin to 20-14.
 
Talia Gouard rocketed a kill before Malloy placed a service ace to cut the deficit to three, 20-17.
 
Gouard concluded the contest with five kills on a .333 clip.
 
SEMO would then come within a point (22-21) after a 3-0 run that featured winners by Malloy, Beasley and Greene.
 
After a Gamecocks service error, Jacksonville State closed the set with back-to-back points to claim the victory.
 
Libero Tara Beilsmith paced the SEMO defense with 12 digs. Ally Dion chipped in six.
 
SEMO concluded the match with a hitting percentage of .277 compared to JSU's .352.
 
Kindermann and Montgomery each registered 11 kills for the Gamecocks. Glotzbach chipped in 10. Lexie Libs dished out 41 assists and Erin Carmichael had 24 digs.
 
The Redhawks continue their 2020-21 Ohio Valley Conference schedule with their home opener on Sunday against Eastern Kentucky. First service is scheduled for 4 p.m., CT at Houck Field House in the Valentine's Day affair. SEMO finishes the two-match series on Monday, Feb. 15 with a 2 p.m. home finale. The Colonels split a pair of matches against UT Martin to open the season.
