CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year Terry Taylor had a double-double 32 points and 14 rebounds, and Austin Peay (13-8, 9-6) beat Southeast Missouri (7-14, 5-10), 78-63, Saturday at the Dunn Center.
APSU was simply too much for SEMO to handle.
Taylor scored 23 first-half points and APSU shot 51.5 percent from the field in the game's opening 20 minutes as the Governors built a 42-27 halftime lead.
Ahead, 26-18, APSU went on a 10-0 run to double its lead. Mike Peake's free throws capped the surge giving the Governors a 36-18 advantage with 4:10 remaining.
Jordyn Adams scored on a driving layup to stretch the Governors lead to 18 again before
Eric Reed, Jr. buried a 3-pointer just before the half ended.
SEMO committed 13 turnovers which led to 12 points in the opening stanza.
The Redhawks were much better in the second half and tied APSU, 36-36, in the final period.
APSU led by as many as 22 points (64-42) with 10:18 left to play. After that, SEMO pulled within 11 on a driving layup by
DQ Nicholas, but that was as close as it would get.
Taylor shot 12-of-18 from the field, knocked down two 3-pointers and made 6-of-9 free throws. He also added two steals and two blocks.
Tai'Reon Joseph followed with 14 points and Carlos Paez chipped in 10. APSU shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field for the game.
Eric Reed, Jr. paced SEMO with a career-high 21 points. Reed, Jr. made 9-of-16 field goals and buried three 3-pointers. He pulled down five rebounds, as well.
The Redhawks outrebounded APSU, 34-32, and hit 44.6 percent (25-of-56) of their field goal attempts.
SEMO was without key reserves
Nate Johnson and
Jordan Love. Johnson was sick and Love had a sore Achilles.
The Redhawks face Austin Peay again in three days when they host the Governors on Feb. 16.
