Zelenchuk and Valeeva Capture Championships at UCA Fall Invitational

Box Score CONWAY, ARK. -  Southeast Missouri women's tennis competed at the Central Arkansas Fall Tournament Sunday and Monday at the UCA Tennis Courts. Myroslava Zelenchuk captured the Flight 5 singles championship in her second-career fall tournament while Lera Valeeva won the seventh singles draw.
 
Zelenchuk, a freshman from Lviv, Ukraine, turned in two victories for the team in the No. 5 spot on Sunday. Zelenchuk defeated Dorota Szczygielska (6-3, 3-6, 10-5) from Northwestern State before picking up a victory over Tiera Jarmond of Missouri State, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. She concluded the tournament, coming back after dropping the first set and defeating Ayu Ishibashi of Northwestern State, 3-6, 6-3, 11-9, Monday.
 
In Flight #7, Valeeva and Manuela Barriga combined for five victories over the two-day tournament.
 
Valeeva secured three victories over Arkansas State, Missouri State and Northwestern State for the championship. The junior from Ekaterinburg, Russia, bested Yasmine Humbert of Arkansas State (6-1, 7-6) and Missouri State's Kate Miley (6-2, 6-1) Sunday before overcoming Thitirat (Gig) Kanaphuet of Northwestern State, 6-3, 7-6, Monday.
 
Barriga defeated Missouri State's Brooke Buehler, 6-3, 6-0, Sunday and Arkansas State's Yasmine Humbert, 4-6, 7-5, 10-8, on Monday. Barriga fell to Mei Ishimura of Central Arkansas, 4-6, 6-1, (10-7), in her second round match Sunday.
 
Ksenia Shikanova played in the No. 4 singles flight for the Redhawks and secured two victories for the team. Shikanova defeated Najah Dawson (6-4, 6-3) of Louisiana Tech and Suomo Hamanaga (3-6, 6-1, 12-10) of Central Arkansas. 
 
Shikanova dropped her third round match to Mariella Minetti of Northwestern State, 4-6, 6-0, (10-5).
 
Playing at No. 1 singles for SEMO was Romana Tarajova. On Sunday, Tarajova came up short against Danielle Morris (3-6, 6-4, 12-10) of Austin Peay and Chunxi Xin (6-7, 6-0, 10-5) of Central Arkansas.  
 
Tarajova closed the two-day tournament with a loss to Missouri State's Tiffini Nash, 6-4, 7-5.
 
SEMO's No. 2 player was Daniela Hlacikova. The sophomore from Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, lost her first match against Fuka Nonoyama (2-6, 4-6) of Central Arkansas, but bounced back and closed the tournament with a pair of wins.
 
Hlacikova cruised past Sandra Lukacova from Missouri State, 6-3, 6-3, before defeating Yada Vasupongchai of UCA, 6-3, 6-0, Monday.
 
Vivian Lai recorded a victory at No. 3 over Alyson Piskulic of Missouri State with a final score of 6-4, 6-2, in the second round. 
 
She dropped her tournament opener and finale to Louisiana Tech's Ilana Tetruashvili (6-1, 7-5) and Olga Bienzobas (6-3, 6-2), respectively.
 
Teona Velkoska picked up a win at No. 6 on Sunday over Austin Peay's Honoka Nakanishi, 7-5, 7-5.
 
Velkoska fell to Arkansas State's Rebecca Brody, 6-3, 6-3, in the opening round and concluded the tournament with a loss to Alexia Romero of Louisiana Tech (4-6, 6-1).
  
DOUBLES
SEMO secured five total victories in the doubles portion of the tournament. 
 
Hlacikova and Zelenchuk recorded victories against Louisiana Tech (6-0, Bienzobas/Romero) on Sunday and again on Monday (6-1, Unkovich/Rodrigues) in the second doubles Flight to conclude the tournament. The duo fell to Vasupongchai and Ishimura of UCA in the first round, 6-4.
 
At Doubles Flight No. 1, Shikanova and Valeeva defeated Missouri State's Piskulic and Jarmond on Sunday, 6-3. Shikanova and Valeeva fell to Xin and Nonoyama of UCA before being edged by Tetruashvili and Schuknect of Louisiana Tech, 7-6 (6).
 
Tarajova and Velkoska defeated the doubles pair of Piskulic and Jarmond from Missouri State on Monday, 6-3, in the final round.
 
Tarajova and Velkoska fell to Dohnalova and Wojcikova of Northwestern State (6-1) and Tetruashvili and Schuknect of Louisiana Tech (6-4) in the first two rounds.
 
Rounding out the doubles portion of the tournament in Flight No. 3 was Lai and Barriga securing victories over Missouri State (7-5, Nash and Miley) and the combined team of Brody and Buehler from Arkansas State and Missouri State, 6-4.

Lai and Barriga fell to Szczygielska and Ishibashi of Northwestern State (6-0) to open the flight.

Due to inclement weather in the Conway area, the tournament was moved to Sunday and concluded on Monday.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
SEMO will be back in action on Saturday against Saint Louis and UT Martin at the Redhawks Tennis Complex. Match times are set for 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., CT, respectively.
