CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Four Redhawks secured flight championships as Southeast Missouri women's tennis hosted Saint Louis and UT Martin in a hidden dual Sunday at the Redhawks Tennis Complex.
Romana Tarajova,
Ksenia Shikanova and
Lera Valeeva won the second, third and fifth singles flight championships, respectively. Tarajova also captured the second doubles flight championship with
Teona Velkoska.
Tarajova finished the day with four wins (two singles and two doubles). The senior from Dolný Kubín, Slovakia, cruised past Elizabeth Mintusova of SLU, 6-0, 6-1, before downing UTM's Jule Streif, 6-3, 6-1, at second singles.
Tarajova and Velkoska swept Jessica Stefan and Lizzie Barlow of Saint Louis, 6-0, in the morning's doubles match. The Redhawks duo then downed Lia Espinal and Mizuki Sakurai of UT Martin, 6-4, to claim the second doubles championship.
Shikanova edged Jessica Stefan of SLU, 7-5, 6-2, at the no. 3 singles flight to start the day before defeating Espinal of UTM, 6-2, 6-2, for the title.
Valeeva beat Barlow (SLU), 6-3, 6-3, in the fifth singles draw to start Sunday's hidden dual. Valeeva then fought past Mizuki Sakurai (UT Martin), 7-6, 2-6, 10-6, for the championship.
Valeeva, a junior from Ekaterinburg, Russia, has now won singles flights at the past two SEMO fall tournaments.
Daniela Hlacikova overcame Mya Spencer of SLU, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8, at the top flight Sunday morning.
Vivian Lai split her fourth singles flight matches. After dropping a decision to Saint Louis in the morning, Lai beat Aziza Aubin (UTM), 6-2, 6-1, in the afternoon tilt.
Manuela Barriga lost both of her fifth singles flight matches. She was overcome by Ariana Ondo of UTM, 6-1, 7-5, to close the day.
Velkoska fell to Kate Sexton (SLU), 6-3, 7-6, at the seventh singles flight.
In doubles, Shikanova and Valeeva defeated Spencer and Mariona Perez (SLU), 6-4, at the first flight. Shikanova and Valeeva were then edged by UTM's Ariana Ondo and Jule Streif, 7-5, to conclude the Invitational.
Lai and
Kseniya Zonova beat Kate Sexton and Nawal Cheema of SLU, 6-2, in the fourth and final doubles flight to start the tournament. Lai then teamed up with Hlacikova to defeat Jillian Niedzialowsk/Aziza Aubin of UTM, 6-4.
SEMO will next compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regionals October 21-24 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
