Redhawks Drop Home-Opener to Northern Illinois, 7-4

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Northern Illinois (2-3) rallied for five runs in the top of the eighth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and beat Southeast Missouri (1-4), 7-4, Friday in the Redhawks home-opener at Capaha Field.

NIU trailed, 4-2, before sending 10 men to the plate in its big eighth inning.

Brady Huebbe drew a one-out walk and went to second on a balk. Jake Dunham walked and Blake Cisneros relieved Bryce Grossius. Jordan Larson and Dylan Lonteen each delivered RBI-singles off Grossius. After a wild pitch moved the runners, Tommy Szczasny knocked in two runs on a base hit to left. Nick Drobushevich, after reaching on an infield single, later scored on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 7-4 advantage.

SEMO got on the board first with two runs in the first inning.

Andrew Keck doubled with one out to begin a streak of four-straight hits. Tyler Wilber reached on an infield single on the next play Justin Dirden and Austin Blazevic followed with RBI-hits to put the Redhawks ahead, 2-0.

Dunham cut SEMO's lead in half with a solo home run in the top of the fourth and NIU tied the game at 2-2 on a two-out, RBI-single by Huebbe in the fifth inning.

An inning later, the Redhawks regained the lead. Dirden led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and came around to score on Wade Stauss' double to left center.

SEMO tacked on another run in the seventh when Keck scored Connor Basler on a sacrifice fly. Basler walked and stole two bases before scoring on the play.

Dylan Dodd struck out eight, walked three and gave up two runs on five hits in six innings during his second start of the season.

The Redhawks bullpen fell apart after Dodd left the game.

SEMO's relievers gave up five runs on four hits, walked four, threw three wild pitches and a balk in the final three innings.
