CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –
LaTrese Saine broke the school's all-time career record in blocks and
Tesia Thompson poured in 30 points, but it wasn't enough as Southeast Missouri (1-2) suffered a 63-49 loss to Mid-American Conference member Eastern Michigan (3-1) Sunday.
Saine had five blocks and established a new program record on her third swat of the game with less than a minute left in the third quarter. She now has 118 career blocks and surpassed the previous mark of 115 held by both Vera Roberts and Pam Iverson.
SEMO never led in the game and started slow missing 11 of its first 14 shots. The Redhawks went scoreless for over two-and-a-half minutes and EMU pulled ahead, 13-8, in the opening period.
After Thompson's basket cut the Eagles lead to 13-10 early in the second quarter, EMU went on an 11-4 run to build a double-digit advantage. Kylee O'Hara heated up to knock down a pair of 3-pointers with her second giving EMU a 24-14 lead at the 6:18 mark.
Areanna Combs later pitched in a 3-pointer to widen EMU's lead to 35-20 with a little over two minutes before the Eagles led, 35-22, at the intermission.
EMU buried eight 3-pointers in the first half, including five in the second quarter. The Eagles shot 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from 3-point range in that period.
The Redhawks managed to cut EMU's lead to 11 on two occasions, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way.
Sophie Bussard made a 3-pointer to make it a 40-29 game with 5:14 left in the third quarter and Thompson buried a trey with 50 seconds left to narrow the Eagles lead to 60-49.
Thompson shot 9-of-20 from the field and 11-of-15 at the free throw line to lead all scorers in the fifth 30-point game of her career. She added six rebounds and two steals in 37 minutes. Thompson did not play against EMU a year ago due to a concussion. Additionally, her 11 free throws tied a career-high.
Saine had five of the Redhawks seven blocks and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Saine fell one block shy of matching her career-high.
Combs dropped in 23 points and made a game-high five 3-pointers to lead three EMU players in double figures. C'Nara Skanes and O'Hara followed with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The Eagles outscored the Redhawks, 30-12, from 3-point range and that was the difference. EMU finished at 10-of-25 for 40 percent beyond the arc.
SEMO shot 27.5 percent (14-of-51) from the field and scored 17 of its points on free throws.
The Redhawks close out their season-opening four-game home stand when they host Western Illinois on Dec. 11.
