CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –
LaTrese Saine scored 16 points to lead Southeast Missouri (2-2) to a 67-57 win over Western Illinois (0-4) Friday night at the Show Me Center.
Saine led four SEMO starters in double figures as the Redhawks closed out their season-opening four-game home stand.
The Redhawks never trailed in the game and capitalized on WIU's poor shooting from the start.
WIU began with a rugged first quarter shooting only 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from the field and 0-of-9 from 3-point range.
Tied, 5-5, SEMO scored the final 11 points of the period to take a 16-5 advantage.
Tesia Thompson kickstarted the 11-0 run with a layup. Four free throws by
Taelour Pruitt, a jumper by Saine and a 3-pointer by
Sophie Bussard completed the stretch.
SEMO built a double-digit lead early in the second quarter after Saine's jumper made it a 18-8 contest. The Leathernecks, however, responded with a 9-0 run and narrowed the Redhawks lead to three (20-17) on a layup by Elizabeth Lutz at the 4:13 mark.
After Bussard made a jumper to push SEMO's lead to 25-17, the Redhawks finished the first half ahead, 27-22.
WIU missed 14 of its 17 three-point shots for a mere 17.6 percent in the first 20 minutes of play.
Bussard's layup gave SEMO its largest lead of the night at 45-30 with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter. After that, WIU couldn't get any closer than six the rest of the game.
Saine shot 8-of-12 from the field, grabbed five rebounds and added two blocks in 32 minutes.
Pruitt followed with 13 points, nine of which came from 3-point range.
Thompson and Bussard chipped in 11 points apiece. Bussard also led the Redhawks with seven rebounds, while Thompson kept her double-digit scoring streak intact at 26-straight games despite getting into early foul trouble.
SEMO shot 40.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field and outrebounded the Leathernecks, 42-35.
WIU shot just over 30 percent (19-of-62) and was 8-of-33 for 24.2 percent from beyond the arc.
The Redhawks cross the Mississippi River to face Southern Illinois in their first road game of the season Sunday.
