CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Eleven different players scored in a balanced effort for Southeast Missouri (1-1) which dismantled the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy, 75-44, on a special night Tuesday.
Prior to SEMO's first victory of the season, the Redhawks received their 2020 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship rings. Two new banners (2020 OVC Tournament Champions and 2020 NCAA Tournament Qualifier) were also dropped from the rafters in front of a reduced Show Me Center crowd.
Tesia Thompson scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures and the Redhawks dominated from start to finish.
LaTrese Saine added 12 points and a game-high four blocks, while
Sophie Bussard chipped in 13 points and
Roshala Scott had 11.
SEMO opened the game on a 10-0 run and never let up.
The Redhawks led by double figures (20-10) at the end of the first quarter and doubled their lead when Bussard buried a 3-pointer to make it a 33-13 game with 4:48 remaining in the second stanza.
SEMO headed into the locker room with a 38-22 advantage at the intermission before continuing to dismantle the Eutectics in the final 20 minutes.
Following a 23-point third quarter, the Redhawks ran their largest lead to 72-35 on a layup by Saine with 6:35 to go.
Thompson shot 9-of-14 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and had three steals. She now has 1,536 points in her career.
Scott made 5-of-10 field goals, added five assists, three steals and a block, while Saine went a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. Saine, who has 113 career blocks, is only three away from breaking SEMO's all-time career record of 115 held by Vera Roberts (1986-90) and Pam Iverson (1998-02).
As a team, SEMO shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the field and outrebounded UHSP, 45-22. The Redhawks forced 19 turnovers and scored 29 points off those miscues. SEMO scored 48 points inside the paint and 16 in transition, as well.
The Redhawks continue their lengthy home stand when they host Mid-American Conference member Eastern Michigan Sunday. Tip is set for 2 p.m., CT.
