CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Eastern Kentucky (28-23, 14-13) scored all of its runs off the long ball to complete a series win over Southeast Missouri (23-29, 10-17) with a 6-3 victory Sunday.
EKU hit four home runs in the game, including one in the first, second, eighth and ninth innings, and that was enough to get by the Redhawks for the second day in a row.
The Colonels took a 2-0 lead after Will Johnson and Daniel Harris IV hit a solo home run in the first two innings. Johnson's home run came in the first at-bat of the game.
SEMO cut EKU's lead in half when Austin Blazevic scored on a sacrifice fly by Devon Wilson in the bottom of the second.
The Redhawks took their only lead of the day with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Alex Nielsen singled home Tyler Wilber and Hunter Southerland ripped a two-out single to left center to score Wilson giving SEMO a slight 3-2 edge.
EKU hit two-run home runs in back-to-back innings to finish off SEMO late.
Brent Lovell homered down the left field line following a Michael Brewer single in the top of the eighth. Then, Harris IV launched his second home run of the game to center after A.J. Lewis walked with one out in the ninth.
Nick Laster (3-0) notched his third win of the season in relief tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Laster took over for starter Brennan Kelly in the sixth. Kelly walked three, struck out two and allowed three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.
Logan Winder (1-2) was charged with the loss. Winder scattered two hits and gave up two runs to go along with a pair of strikeouts in two innings. Noah Niznik worked six innings and allowed two runs on four hits in six innings before giving way to Winder in the seventh.
Both teams registered seven hits. Wilber paced SEMO going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Wright, Nielsen, Andrew Keck, Wilson and Hunter Southerland followed with one hit apiece. Wilber, Blazevic and Nielsen accounted for the Redhawks runs.
Harris led EKU with a pair of home runs, two runs scored and three RBI.
SEMO travels to Morehead State for its final three-game series of the season. The Redhawks and Eagles start their series on May 16.
