Redhawks Start Strong, But Come Up Short as Eastern Kentucky Evens Series

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Eastern Kentucky (27-23, 13-13) overcame a five-run deficit by scoring the game's final seven runs to get by Southeast Missouri (23-28, 10-16), 7-5, Saturday night at Capaha Field.

EKU evened the series at one game apiece.

SEMO scored in each of the first three innings to build its early five-run advantage, but came up empty in the final six frames as the Colonels mounted their comeback.

Tyler Wilber got the Redhawks their first run when he was hit by a pitch, advanced two bases on wild pitches and scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out in the second inning, Devon Wilson launched a two-run home run to center field for his first round-tripper of the season.

SEMO tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third with the help of a hit and an error. Austin Blazevic singled and Danny Wright scored on an error. Alex Nielsen laid down a sacrifice-bunt to get Wilber in for the other unearned run as the Redhawks pulled ahead, 5-0.

Back-to-back home runs by A.J. Lewis and Daniel Harris IV put EKU on the scoreboard with one out in the top of the fourth inning.

Nick Howie knocked in two more runs on a double in the fifth inning before the Colonels tied the game on a single by Charles Ludwick in the sixth.

Ryland Kerr and Howie delivered back-to-back RBI-hits to put EKU ahead, 7-5, in the seventh inning.

SEMO had a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Darren Williams struck out Wright to silence the threat.

Jacob Ferris (5-4) picked up the win allowing five runs on four hits in six innings of work. Ferris also struck out three and walked two. Williams was credited with his second save.

Daniel Bergtholdt (5-6) took the loss. Bergtholdt scattered three hits and gave up three runs in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.

EKU outhit SEMO, 10-4. Connor Basler, Blazevic, Andrew Keck and Wilson all had one hit.

The Redhawks and Colonels wrap up their series at 1 p.m., CT, Sunday.
