LAWRENCE, Kan.– Southeast Missouri (15-7) scored eight runs in the first two innings and never looked back in a commanding 8-2 victory over UMKC (14-7) Saturday afternoon at the Jayhawk Classic.
SEMO and UMKC played the only game in day two of the tournament as the rest of Saturday's contests were cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Redhawks, who picked up their Ohio Valley Conference high 15
thwin of the season, wasted no time jumping on UMKC starter Mia Hoveland scoring five two-out runs in the top of the first inning.
With
Mykaela Arellanes already on base,
Ashley Ellis sparked a two-out rally with a walk.
Addison Barnouski followed with a single and Arellanes scored.
Chelsy Pena doubled to right field on the next play allowing both Barnouski and Ellis to score. Two more two-out hits, including a RBI-single by
Rachael Donald and run-scoring double by
Danina Marton came after that giving the Redhawks a quick 5-0 advantage.
SEMO added three more runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the second.
Arellanes led off with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single by
Rachel Anderson. Arelannes later stole third and scored on a throwing error. Barnouski singled to left field and Anderson scored, while Donald knocked in Barnouski on a two out double to put SEMO ahead, 8-0.
UMKC's only runs of the game came on a two-run home run by Alexis D'Ambrosio in the top of the third inning.
Rachel Rook gave the Redhawks another strong start in the circle. Rook struck out eight of the 18 hitters she faced and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings of work. Rook ran her record to 4-2 this season.
Alexis Estes tossed three scoreless one-hit innings in relief. Estes also struck out five and walked none. Her five strikeouts marked a season-high.
SEMO put together another balanced effort offensively with six different players getting a hit. Anderson, Barnouski and Donald each went 2-for-3 and scored to lead the Redhawks. Anderson has reached base in 16 consecutive games.
Defensively, the Redhawks went without an error for the third game in a row and sixth time this year.
SEMO, which has won three-straight and eight of its last 10 contests, concludes play at the Jayhawk Classic Sunday. The Redhawks face Maine at 10 a.m. and Kansas at 12:30 p.m., CT.
