CONWAY, Ark. – Romana Tarajova and
Manuela Barriga captured the Flight B Doubles Championship as Southeast Missouri women's tennis continued its 2018 season this weekend at the Central Arkansas (UCA) Fall Invitational at the Conway Tennis Center.
Â
"This was a tough tournament and our team showed tenacity on the court," head coach
Mary Beth Gunn said. "We are continuing to improve each day and our freshmen have really started to look comfortable on the court. Tarajova and Barriga are starting to gel as a doubles team; they played very smart doubles this tournament."
Â
Tarajova and Barriga posted a perfect 3-0 record this weekend to secure the Flight B Doubles title. The freshman duo opened the tournament with wins over Flavia Gutierrez and Jovana Antonijevic (Oral Roberts, 6-3) and Amelia Guevremont and Shannon O'Brien of Arkansas State (7-5).
Â
Tarajova and Barriga then defeated UCA's Yada Vasupongchai and Marli Van Heerden, 6-4, in the championship final.
Â
In singles, Tarajova made it to the Flight B Championship and
Teona Velkoska (Flight D), Barriga (Flight E) and
Anais Emelie (Flight F) each advanced to their third/fourth place matches.
Â
Tarajova opened her bracket with a 6-3, 7-5 win over ORU's Flavia Gutierrez and then overcame a first set loss to beat Southeastern Louisiana's (SELU) Flory Bierma, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4, to qualify for the championship.
Â
Velkoska split her matches and started the Flight D Draw with a victory over Jimena Garbino of Louisiana Monroe, 3-6, 6-1, 10-3. She then fell to Himani Mor (SELU) 0-6, 6-0, 10-6.
Â
Barriga dealt a loss to Guevremont (ASU), 6-4, 6-2, in the first round of the Flight E bracket before dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Andrea Vasiljevic of ORU.
Â
Emelie cruised by Valentina Gilbert (ORU), 6-0, 6-0, to start her tournament in the Flight F Draw before falling to Missouri Kansas City's Thanushree Vale.
Â
• Saturday's matches were cancelled due to rain and because of that some draws weren't completed.
