Southeast Tennis Opens Fall Season at Austin Peay Fall Invitational Friday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis opens its fall season this weekend at the Austin Peay Fall Invitational in Clarksville, Tennessee, Friday and Saturday.
"We are very excited for our first tournament of the fall season," head coach Mary Beth Gunn said. "We want to be the team with the most positive energy at the tournament. Right now is a time for us to work on improving our game and making any necessary adjustments. With our large incoming freshmen class, they will get high level collegiate match play in and see what college tennis is all about. We have been preparing ourselves mentally for this tournament and are ready to play."
The 10-member Redhawks tennis team features five returners with seniors Isabella Krupa and Anais Emelie along with junior Kseniya Zonova and sophomores Maja Lundell and Kelly Sicha all back for the 2018-19 campaign.
Zonova led the team in 2017-18 with a 20-10 singles record (10-6 duals, 6-3 OVC) as she earned Second-Team All-OVC honors.
The 2018-19 SEMO team has five freshmen in Manuela Barriga, Sneha Sinha, Romana Tarajova, Teona Velkoska and Cape Girardeau, Missouri native, Grace Powderly.
Southeast will join Belmont, Tennessee at Chattanooga, Murray State, Central Arkansas, UT Martin and tournament host, Austin Peay, at this weekend's invitational.
The tournament starts with singles matches on Friday at 9 a.m. Barriga, Velkoska, Zonova, Tarajova and Krupa will compete in the Flight A Singles Draw. Tarajova has a first round bye and will make her Redhawks debut at 11:20 a.m.
Powderly, Emelie, Sicha, Lundell and Sinha will all play in the Flight B Singles bracket. Sinha will compete at 12:20 p.m. after a bye in the Round of 32s.
In doubles, Velkoska will pair with Krupa while Barriga will compete with Tarajova in the Flight A Doubles Draw with matches starting at 3 p.m. Friday.
Sicha and Powderly, Zonova and Sneha, and Lundell and Emelie are in the Flight B Doubles bracket. Zonova and Sneha are the third seed in the draw and will compete at 4:30 p.m. after a bye.
