Redhawks Lose to Austin Peay, 61-50

Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's basketball fell to the Austin Peay Governors 61-50 on Saturday afternoon at the Show Me Center.
 
Both teams struggled from the field early, with each team only hitting just one of their first six field goal attempts. About midway through the quarter Ashton Luttrull caught fire from the perimeter hitting three three-pointers giving Southeast a small lead.
 
After one, the Redhawks led the Governors 15-9. Southeast held Austin Peay to just three field goals and forced five turnovers in the quarter.
 
Austin Peay opened the second on a 10-2 run to take the lead at 19-17. The Govs improved second quarter shooting combined with their offensive rebounds (11 in the first half) helped stretch their lead to eight at one point in the second quarter.
 
The Redhawks went without a field goal the last four minutes of the second period. Southeast managed to get to the line 12 times in the second quarter but hit just five of their attempts.
 
Austin Peay led 33-27 at half. Tesia Thompson had 11 at half for Southeast.
 
Both teams went back and forth to open up the third, with Austin Peay hanging on to a cushion around four points.
 
The Govs stretched their lead to eight around the three minute mark despite going over five minutes without a field goal.
 
Austin Peay led Southeast 43-35 after three. Southeast shot just 1-10 in the third quarter.
 
Southeast opened up the quarter on a 9-1 run to tie the game at 44-44 with 7:25 remaining.
 
After tying the game, the Redhawks went over two minutes without scoring including missing seven consecutive shots, allowing Austin Peay to score six unanswered and reclaim the lead.
 
Austin Peay extended its lead to nine at the 1:14 mark after Brianne Alexander scored 11 straight for the Governors.
 
The Redhawks went ice cold down the stretch, hitting zero field goals for over the final three minutes and only one of their last 12 attempts.
 
For the game, Southeast shot 32 percent from the field and 58 percent from the free throw line.
 
Brianne Alexander finished with 26 points and four rebounds for the Governors.
 
Ashton Luttrull led the way for the Redhawks with 19 points.
 
Tesia Thompson chipped in 16 points and four rebounds.
 
The Redhawks will head back on the road for their next game against the Morehead State Eagles on Thursday. Tip-off is at 4:30 p.m. at Ellis Johnson Arena.
