Redhawks Fall to Eastern Kentucky, 91-88

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky (11-19, 5-12) rallied back from a 15-point deficit and made five free throws in the final 20 seconds to edge Southeast Missouri (14-16, 8-9), 91-88, Thursday night at McBrayer Arena.

It was a tale of two halves for SEMO, which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.

In a game that featured six ties and 13 lead changes, SEMO caught fire from long range shooting 9-of-15 for a 60 percent clip in the opening stanza. The Redhawks made eight of their first 11 treys of the game and had three players reach double figures in the scoring column during the first 20 minutes.

Ahead, 30-23, with 7:34 left to play, SEMO put together an 11-3 run to widen its lead to 15. Denzel Mahoney scored four points, while Jonathan Dalton and Ledarrius Brewer each buried a 3-pointer. Mark Laros grabbed an offensive rebound and scored off a miss by Donnie Lewis to give the Redhawks a 41-26 advantage at the 5:31 mark.

EKU answered with a 17-5 jaunt in the last five-plus minutes of the first half to slice the Redhawks lead to 46-43 at the intermission. Nick Mayo scored 13 of his 17 first-half points in that stretch alone.

SEMO shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the field with Daniel Simmons (10), Brewer (10) and Mahoney (13) all scoring double figures in the first half.

EKU took the lead when JacQuess Hobbs stole the ball and DeAndre Dishman scored on a layup to make it 50-49 with 16:38 remaining.

A Zach Charles free throw, jumper by Mayo and free throw by Dishman pushed the Colonels lead to 54-49 at the 15:11 mark.

SEMO battled back to regain a 60-58 lead on Justin Carpenter's jumper with 12:25 to go.

The Redhawks would get ahead by one on three occasions when Dalton made two free throws and Ray Kowalski buried a 3-pointer on two possessions.

Another Kowalski 3-pointer, this time, gave SEMO a slight 78-76 lead with a little over five minutes remaining. However, that would be the last Redhawk lead.

EKU used a 5-0 surge to stretch its lead to 85-78 before SEMO pulled to within one (86-85) on Brewer's 3-pointer with 25 seconds.

The Colonels again managed to go up by five thanks to a pair of free throws from both Hobbs and Dujuanta Weaver.

Brewer answered with his fourth 3-pointer of the game to narrow EKU's lead to 90-88 with five seconds on the clock.

SEMO had one last chance after Hobbs split two free throws, but Simmons' long desperation shot missed.

Mayo, one of four Colonels in double figures, led EKU with 25 points and nine rebounds. Hobbs followed with 16 points, while Dishman and Dillon Avare added 14 and 12 points, respectively. Avare also blocked Kowalski's 3-point attempt when SEMO had a chance to tie the game with 11 seconds.

EKU shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field and outscored SEMO, 20-10, at the free throw line.

Mahoney pitched in 26 points to lead four players in double figures for SEMO. He shot 8-of-15 from the field, knocked down three 3-pointers, dished out five assists, grabbed six rebounds and went a perfect 7-of-7 at the free throw line.

Brewer had 16 points and eight rebounds, Simmons scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds, and Kowalski chipped in 14 points off the bench. Jonathan Dalton dished out four assists and, as a result, went over 200 in his career.

SEMO made a season-high 16-of-27 three-pointers for 59.3 percent. The Redhawks shot 54.4 percent (31-of-57) from the floor for the contest.

The Redhawks conclude their season at home when they host UT Martin Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4:15 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center. Seniors Simmons and Milos Vranes will be honored prior to the game.
