CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis continues its fall season Friday at the 2018 ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Central Regional held at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex in Iowa City, Iowa.
The tournament will consist of 26 schools and more than 160 student-athletes from the Central Region. Singles qualifying rounds, qualifying consolation and doubles rounds of 128 and 64 will be played on Friday starting at 9 a.m. and run through Tuesday, Oct. 16.
"For our freshmen, I am excited for them to watch and compete at this level," head coach Mary Beth Gunn said of the regional. "It gives our team something to work toward. We have a strong team and I think it will be a big confidence boost to show ourselves that we can compete at this elite level."
Southeast enters the weekend tournament after having success at both fall invites the team has competed at in 2018.
Sneha Sinha finished as the Flight B Singles runner-up at the Austin Peay Fall Invitational the opening weekend of the fall campaign on Sept. 15 in Clarksville, Tennessee. Manuela Barriga and Romana Tarajova also claimed the Flight B Doubles Championship at the Central Arkansas (UCA) Fall Invitational Sept. 22 in Conway, Arkansas.
Tarajova (Flight B) and Teona Velkoska (Flight D) also both advanced to their respective championship finals at the UCA Fall Invitational.
The 2018-19 Redhawk tennis team is made up of 10 players and features five returners with seniors Isabella Krupa and Anais Emelie along with junior Kseniya Zonova and sophomores Maja Lundell and Kelly Sicha all back for the 2018-19 campaign.
Zonova led the team in 2017-18 with a 20-10 singles record (10-6 duals, 6-3 OVC) as she earned Second-Team All-OVC honors. Zonova also advanced to the 2017 ITA Central Regional consolation semifinals in Lawrence, Kansas, after a win over Iowa's Adorabol Huckleby in the Round of 16s.
"Kseniya was a very strong competitor at the ITAs last year; having this experience gives her an advantage going into the tournament," Gunn said of Zonova. "She knows what she is capable of doing."
The team also has five freshmen in Barriga, Sinha, Tarajova, Velkoska and Cape Girardeau, Missouri native, Grace Powderly.
Sinha and Tarajova lead the Redhawks in 2018 with four singles wins each. Barriga and Velkoska each have three victories this fall. On the doubles side, Barriga and Tarajova have registered a 4-1 mark.
Barriga, Emelie, Krupa, Sinha, Tarajova, Velkoska and Zonova will compete at this weekend's regional. Friday opens with singles at 9 a.m. followed by the doubles tournament at 3 p.m.
