Zonova’s Singles Victory Propels Tennis Past Bradley for First Win of 2018

PEORIA, Ill. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis (1-2) recorded its first win of the spring 2018 season in thrilling fashion Friday night at the Clubs at River City.

Sophomore Kseniya Zonova won her third singles bout over Malini Wijesinghe to propel the Redhawks past Bradley (0-1), 4-3, in the final match of the evening. Zonova beat Wijesinghe in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, after trailing the opening set, 0-3.

"This match was a great experience for us to play our big tennis in tight moments," head coach Mary Beth Gunn said. "It came down to Zonova's match; she was down 0-3 in the first set but she realized her team needed her and she dug deep to come back and win the match. It was a true team effort today and I'm proud of how everyone played."

The Redhawks claimed the doubles point to open the competition with the Bradley Braves. Anais Emelie and Maja Lundell defeated Victoria Gonzalez and Kinga Kovacs 6-2 in their third doubles match and then Zonova and Isabella Krupa were victorious over Natalia Barbery and Sandra Maletin at the top doubles spot, 6-3. Oleksandra Doroshenko and Alessandra Maya Thompson completed the doubles sweep with a 7-6 win over Alexa Brandt and Malini Wijesinghe.

On the singles side, Southeast jumped out to a 3-0 edge with victories from Maya Thompson and Anais Emelie at the sixth and fifth singles positions. Maya Thompson  cruised by Kinga Kovacs, 6-1, 6-0, and Emelie beat Gonzalez, 6-2, 6-1.

The Braves then evened the match at 3-3 with wins over Lundell, Doroshenko and Krupa setting the stage for Zonova's comeback victory to clinch the meet.
