Series History
Friday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of soccer. The Redhawks will look for their fourth program win over an SEC team. They beat Tennessee in the season opener in 2016. The Redhawks are 3-8-1 all-time against SEC opponents with wins over Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Mississippi State climbed to 5-0 on the season last weekend with a 6-2 win over Colgate. Five of its six goals came in the first half of the match. The Bulldogs are under the direction of first-year head coach Tom Anagnost. State finished the 2016 season 6-12 and 1-10 in SEC play.
So far this season, the Bulldogs own wins over Stephen F. Austin, Missouri State, Louisiana Tech, and Central Arkansas and are one of 14 undefeated teams in the country. State has only given up three goals while netting 13. Three of its five wins have been shutouts.
A.K. Ward leads the team with three goals while three others have each contributed two. Goalkeeper Catalina Perez is 5-0 in goal with three shutouts and a 0.60 goals against average.
Games with Houston (Sept. 1) and South Florida (Sept. 7) have forced cancellations due to hurricanes, prompting Friday's game with Southeast.
Let's Recap
Southeast will look to get back in the win column Friday after back-to-back losses to Missouri State and Louisville. The Redhawks have lost three of their last four games, all by way of shutout. Most recently, the Redhawks fell at home to Louisville, 1-0. Southeast held the Cardinals scoreless until the 84th minute.
Kindra Lierz and the defense fended off the advancing Cardinal offense the majority of the game.
Looking Ahead
Southeast will set its sights on OVC play following Friday's match. Tennessee Tech comes to Cape on Friday, Sept. 15 to begin the conference slate. That night will be Cape Trails Greek Night at Houck. The Redhawks will then open a five-game road stretch beginning that Sunday, Sept. 17, at UT Martin.
Approaching 100 Home Wins
In its 19th season, Southeast Missouri has won a total of 99 matches at the friendly confines of Houck Field. In all, the Redhawks are 99-40-21 at home.
