CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's tennis opens its fall schedule on Friday at the two-day Central Arkansas Fall Invitational in Conway, Ark.
"They are so ready to play," Redhawks coach Mary Beth Gunn said of the team. "The ladies are very excited to get out on the court and showcase what they can do. I am very excited to see the freshman play to see where they are. I also am very excited to see how this is going to shake out. They are ready to play some other people and showcase their talent."
Gunn added that a main focus for the team is conditioning and fitness.
"One of the goals is to outlast this weekend," Gunn said. "It is going to be 100 degrees [Fahrenheit] and we are playing a lot of matches in a two-day timeframe. So, if everybody can finish all of their matches, that's a big goal for our team and to showcase our conditioning level. I think that if we can do that, there is no reason why we can't be competitive this weekend."
The Redhawks roster features four returnees, including juniors Anais Emelie and Isabella Krupa, along with sophomores Oleksandra Doroshenko and Kseniya Zonova. Freshmen Maja Lundell and Alessandra Maya Thompson round out the six-player squad.
Doroshenko enters the season after a breakout inaugural collegiate campaign where she was named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and earned Second-Team All-OVC honors after she recorded a team-best 16-5 singles record.
Southeast will join Arkansas State, Northeastern State (Oklahoma), Missouri State and tournament host, Central Arkansas, at this weekend's invitational.
Doroshenko and Krupa will compete in the Flight 1 Singles Draw. Zonova and Emelie are in the Flight 2 Singles Draw and Lundell will compete in the Flight 3 Singles Draw. Krupa, Zonova and Lundell all have matches at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and Doroshenko and Emelie have first round byes and play at 5:30 p.m.
In doubles, Doroshenko teams up with Krupa and Zonova plays with Emelie in the Flight 1 Doubles Draw. Both doubles teams have their first match on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
