Redhawks Fall in Extra Innings at Murray State, 9-7

MURRAY, Ky. – Southeast Missouri (20-16, 10-9) dropped a 9-7 decision to Murray State (17-20, 7-9) Friday afternoon in 10 innings.

Due to rain entering the area, Friday's scheduled doubleheader was held to just one game. The teams are scheduled to play game two Saturday at 2 p.m., weather permitting.

Friday's extra-inning contest also featured a two-hour weather delay following the fourth inning.

Clay Chandler pitched four innings in his 10th start of the season. He gave up three runs, only two were earned, on six hits. He fanned five and walked two. He exited following the weather delay.

Four Redhawk relievers were used in Friday's game. Joey Burris pitched the longest of the four at three complete innings but allowed two runs. Jared Waldhoff (1-1) recorded the loss after allowing the winning run to reach in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Ryan Dills also pitched four innings in his start for Murray State. Dills surrendered five runs on four hits, struck out three, and walked two with a hit batsman. MSU also used four pitchers out of the pen. Derrik Watson (1-2) picked up the win as the pitcher of record in the 10th.

Southeast was outhit 12-9 Friday. Tristen Gagan was responsible for a third of the Redhawk hits, finishing 3-for-5 with a run scored. Brian Lees and Connor Basler picked up a pair of hits apiece.

The Redhawks used a hit batsman and back-to-back walks to load the bases to begin the game. A run scored on a 6-4-3 double play hit into by Gagan. Lees plugged the right center gap for the first hit of the game, pushing another early run across for SEMO, 2-0.

Murray State got on the board and threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Chandler issued a leadoff walk to Tyler Lawrence to begin the inning. Jack Hranec shot a hit into right which Chris Osborne overran, allowing the first Racer run to score. Chandler stranded Hranec on third in the inning.

Southeast plated a trio of runs in the top of the fourth to widen the lead. Following a leadoff base hit by Gagan and a double by Lees, his second of the game, Chris Caffrey grounded out to second to plate Gagan. Danny Wright hit a slow roller that the first baseman picked up and threw to the plate, but Lees slid a foot under the tag for another Redhawk run. Wright was bunted to second and scored on an RBI base hit by Kyle Bottger, 5-1 SEMO.

Hranec used a two-run home run to right in the bottom of the fourth to take a couple runs back, 5-3.

Immediately following the end of the fourth inning, the game was sent into a two-hour weather delay.

The bats were silent until the bottom of the eighth when the Racers plated four runs to take the late lead. A pair of free bases on a hit batsman and a walk started the inning. Beltran entered to pitch and surrendered an RBI single to make it a one-run game. Davis Sims doubled to left center to drive in both runners and put Murray on top 6-5. Sims was bunted to third and scored on a passed ball to make it 7-5 going to the ninth.

With their backs suddenly against the wall, the Redhawks used a pair of leadoff walks in the top of the ninth to keep the game alive. After walks to Chris Osborne and Dan Holst, Gagan lined a single into center, scoring Osborne. Lees followed by grounding into a no-out 6-3 double play, allowing Holst to score and tie the game.

An already long day was extended as the game was thrust into extra innings.

The bottom of the 10th began with Waldhoff hitting Lawrence. Hranec capped his strong offensive day by knocking a two-run home run over the wall in right to secure the Racer win, 9-7.

Hranec finished 4-for-5 on the day with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored. Adam Bauer recorded a three-hit day while Lawrence scored four times.
