Redhawks Play Racers to a 2-2 Tie

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's soccer (7-3-2, 1-1-1 OVC) drew a 2-2 tie with Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State (2-4-2, 1-0-1 OVC) Friday evening at Houck Stadium.
 
The Redhawks came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second half but Murray buried the equalizer in the final minute of the second half to send the match into overtime.
 
Southeast put up a season-high 25 shots, putting 13 on goal, also a season high. The tandem of Natasha Minor and Esmeralda Gonzales scored the tying and go-ahead goals in the second half for the Redhawks. Minor led the Redhawks with eight shots, putting four on goal while Gonzales had six shots.
 
Kindra Lierz (7-3-2) played the full 110 minutes in goal for the Redhawks. Lierz made four saves.
 
Alex Steigerwald (1-3-2) also played the match in its entirety. The sophomore made 11 saves against the Redhawks.
 
Harriet Withers netted her fifth goal of the season in the 15th minute to give Murray State a 1-0 lead. The lead held going into halftime.
 
At halftime, Southeast led in shots, 6-3.
 
Minor scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute. Kaitlin Kuznacic and Gonzales set up a play in the middle. Gonzales tapped it out to Minor who faked Steigerwald out and buried the goal in the net.
 
The goal was Minor's eighth of the season and 24th of her career. She now has 61 career points, putting her in third all time.
 
Three minutes later, Gonzales scored an unassisted go-ahead goal to put SEMO on top 2-1. It was her third of the season.
 
Murray State's Taylor Richerson tied the match with 34 seconds left in regulation to send the match into overtime.
 
Minor had a chance in the first overtime to secure the victory with a penalty kick opportunity in the 94th minute, but Steigerwald made the stop to continue the match.
 
SEMO had six corner kicks in the game while the Racers had four.
 
Fouls were plentiful in the match as Southeast was called for 23 and Murray State was called for 21. There were also six yellow cards handed out, four for MSU, two for SEMO.
 
Southeast Missouri will be back in action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the Redhawks host Austin Peay. The Touchdown Plaza area in the east end of the field will be open for tailgating.
