CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Jacksonville State (22-14, 12-0) used four home runs to sweep Southeast Missouri (11-21, 5-7), 6-5, 9-2, in a doubleheader at the Southeast Softball Complex Saturday.
All of JSU's homers were three-run bombs, as the Gamecocks remained undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference play.
A four-run fifth inning helped JSU overcome a three-run deficit in game one.
The Gamecocks trailed, 3-0, after four innings when they mounted their comeback with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
With one out and two runners on, Ella Denes slugged a three-run home run just inside the foul pole down the right field line. Stephanie Lewis' sacrifice fly knocked in Jordan Bullock to put JSU ahead, 4-3.
The Gamecocks widened their lead to 6-3 in the top of the seventh when Lewis hit into a fielder's choice to score Emily Woodruff and Denes touched home on a groundout to first base.
Southeast, however, rallied during its final at-bat in the seventh.
Harli Wheeler doubled and
Claire Wernig singled to give the Redhawks runners at second and third with one out.
Savannah Carpenter lifted a sacrifice fly to center field and Wheeler scored.
Riley Hayes kept things going with a single and gave way to pinch-runner
Nicole Deering. On the next play,
Danielle Turner singled home Wernig and advanced to second on the throw. Center fielder Emily Woodruff's throw sailed to the backstop over the head of catcher Jamie McGuire, but Deering remained at third base.
Brittany Stevens then grounded out to pitcher Whitney Gillespie for the final out of the game.
Gillespie improved to 7-1 this season after giving up seven hits, five runs and six walks in her complete game victory.
Madeline Krumrey (5-8) suffered the loss. Krumrey allowed six runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out seven. Her seven strikeouts matched a season-high.
Both JSU and Southeast collected seven hits.
Denes went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs to lead the Gamecocks.
Wheeler went 2-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles and one RBI. Wernig, Hayes, Turner, Stevens and
Sarah Messex added one hit apiece.
The Redhawks also committed three errors, all of which came during JSU's four-run fifth inning.
JSU hit a trio of three-run home runs to finish off its doubleheader sweep in the nightcap.
Gillespie, the Gamecocks third baseman in game two, smacked a home run down the left field line with two outs in the top of the first inning. McGuire and Denes also scored on the play, as JSU took a 3-0 advantage.
A two-out double by Turner cut JSU's lead to a run in the bottom of the second before Denes launched her three-run homer to grab the Gamecocks a 6-2 lead.
Neither team scored for four innings until McGuire lifted a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, capping JSU's 9-2 victory.
Taylor West (6-4) went the distance, giving up just four hits and two runs to go along with seven strikeouts.
Haley Thogmartin (6-8) worked 1.1 innings, allowing two three-run home runs and five hits in that span. Thogmartin also struck out two and faced 10 hitters.
Mackenize Hoelting scattered three hits and gave up the other three-run homer in 5.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Denes went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBIs, while McGuire went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a homer and three RBIs.
Turner went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead Southeast.
Wernig and Hayes each had hitting streaks end at 12 and seven games, respectively.
Southeast looks to snap a seven-game losing streak when it returns to action to host Tennessee Tech in a 1 p.m., CT, doubleheader Sunday.
