CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (12-22, 6-8) ended a season-long eight-game losing streak when it split a doubleheader with Tennessee Tech (14-23, 5-8) Sunday at the Southeast Softball Complex.
Â
Southeast dropped the first game, 3-2, and won the nightcap by a score of 5-2. The game two victory was the Redhawks first win in April and first since Mar. 26.
Â
A First-Team All-OVC selection a year ago, Danielle Liberatore pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts to lead TTU to a one-run win in the first contest.
Â
Liberatore had a perfect game through 3.1 innings until
Harli Wheeler wrecked it with a double to left center in the bottom of the fourth. She retired her first 10 hitters of the game and struck out the side on two occasions.
Â
After Southeast had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, Liberatore recorded back-to-back strikeouts nail down her ninth win of the season.
Â
The Redhawks fell behind early when Alyssa Richards hit a two-run home run out of the No. 3 spot in TTU's lineup. Olivia Bennett drew a one-out walk before scoring on Richards' homer to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
Â
Wheeler doubled and came around to score with the help of an error in the fourth. Two innings later, Wheeler hit a one-out triple to left center and tied the game at 2-2 on an ensuing sacrifice fly by
Savannah Carpenter.
Â
TTU scored its decisive run on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Gabby LaSala singled to center and moved into scoring position when Jessie Lowery reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt by Gabby Perez advanced LaSala to third before she scored the winning run.
Â
Liberatore (9-11) gave up only two runs on three hits and walked one in her complete game win.
Â
Madeline Krumrey (5-9) suffered the loss. Krumrey allowed five hits and three runs, while striking out five and walking two in 6.1 innings.
Â
Wheeler went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and both runs scored to lead Southeast.
Â
The nightcap started exactly like game one began, with Richards hitting a home run. Richards crushed her two-out homer over the left field wall with two outs, giving TTU a 1-0 edge.
Â
Southeast's first three hitters reached safely and scored as the Redhawks pulled ahead in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
Claire Wernig led off with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a base hit by Wheeler. Carpenter then stepped in and cleared the bases with a three-run home run to straightaway center. Carpenter's fifth home run of the season gave Southeast a 3-1 advantage.
Â
The Redhawks tacked on another run on a two-out single by Hayes in the bottom of the third inning.
Â
TTU cut Southeast's lead in half on Sara Freels' two-out solo home run to left, but the Redhawks answered when
Nicole Deering scored an unearned run in the fourth inning. Golden Eagle right fielder mis-played a fly ball by Deering, who went all the way to third on the play. Deering scored on an error by LaSala to push the Redhawks lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
Neither team would score in the final three innings.
Â
Haley Thogmartin (7-8) earned the win after giving up two runs and nine hits, while striking out four in seven innings. It was Thogmartin's fourth complete game of the season.
Â
Taylor Waldrop (0-2) took the loss, scattering six hits and allowing five runs in three innings of work.
Â
Offensively, Southeast had eight hits with Carpenter going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, run scored and three RBIs to pave the way. Wheeler and
Sarah Messex also added two hits each.
Today's doubleheader started an hour later due to rain and lightning in the area.
Â
The Redhawks will hit the road for their next nine games and return to action for a midweek doubleheader at Saint Louis Wednesday.
