Bark in the ParkSaturday's doubleheader against Jacksonville State is Bark in the Park. Bring your canine companion to this year's event which is sponsored by Mississippi Mutts. Enjoy a great day at the dog-friendly ballpark and cheer on Southeast softball. Mississippi Mutts will be present to bring awareness and raise money for the Humane Society.
Homestand ClosesSoutheast completes its six-game homestand with doubleheaders against Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech this weekend. The Redhawks are currently 0-2 during its longest homestand of the season after dropping a doubleheader to Southeastern Conference member Arkansas (Apr. 6). Southeast is 5-4 at the Southeast Softball Complex this year.
April StartThe Redhawks started April on a five-game losing streak, with all of those losses decided by no more than three runs. Southeast was on the short end of three one-run losses during that span and let leads slip away in each of their last three contests. The five-game losing streak is the Redhawks longest this season.
Looking AheadAfter this weekend's matchups, Southeast hits the road for its next nine games. The Redhawks head two hours north for a midweek doubleheader at Saint Louis (Apr. 13) and then visit UT Martin for a three-game series (Apr. 16-17). Southeast closes out its lengthy road stretch with doubleheaders at Eastern Kentucky (Apr. 23) and Morehead State (Apr. 24). UTM (3rd), EKU (t1st) and MSU (4th) rank in the top half of the Ohio Valley Conference standings.
Last Time OutAfter a two-and-a-half hour rain delay Southeast and Arkansas were able to get both games of a doubleheader in Wednesday at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Razorbacks pulled off two come-from-behind victories to hand the Redhawks their second-straight series loss. Southeast let a three-run lead get away in the sixth inning of a 7-4 loss in game one and surrendered a one-run lead with two outs in the seventh inning during a 4-3 setback in the nightcap.
Multiple Home RunsThe Redhawks hit multiple home runs in a game for the fourth time this season when it launched three in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader against Arkansas.
Claire Wernig hit her first career home run to put Southeast ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first inning.
Savannah Carpenter led things off a homer to left center in the fourth and
Haylee Krack delivered her team-high sixth round-tripper when she hit a solo shot in the fifth. The Redhawks are 3-1 in games where they hit two or more home runs.
Hayes Breaks ThroughCatcher
Riley Hayes hit a team-high .500 (4-for-8) with two runs scored, three doubles, a home run and three RBIs in Southeast's series at SIU Edwardsville (Apr. 2-3). Hayes hit safely in all three of those contests. She hit her first home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning to give the Redhawks a 3-0 lead during Sunday's finale. Hayes, who owns a six-game hitting streak, increased her batting average from .231 to .303 over Southeast's last five games.
Wernig On a RollRight fielder
Claire Wernig leads Southeast with a .363 batting average through 30 starts this season. Wernig has a team-high 37 hits and 22 runs scored to go along with seven doubles, one home run and seven RBI as one of three Redhawks hitting over .300. She also owns a team-best 12 multiple-hit games. Wernig hit .286 in 41 games and 27 starts a year ago. She has led Southeast in hitting four-straight weeks.
Keep it GoingClaire Wernig carries an 11-game hitting streak into this weekend, the longest of her career and longest of any Redhawk since 2012. Wernig posted multiple-hits in six of her starts during that span. She is hitting .436 (17-for-39) with nine run scored, three doubles, a home run and four RBIs over that stretch. Taylor Cowan was the last Southeast player to have a double-digit game hitting streak when she hit safely in 10-straight contests in 2012. Wernig ranks 17th in the Ohio Valley Conference in batting average.
