Redhawks Drop Doubleheader to Arkansas, 7-4, 4-3

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas (15-23) pulled off two late-game comeback victories in a 7-4, 4-3, doubleheader sweep of Southeast Missouri (11-19) Wednesday at the Southeast Softball Complex.

After a two-and-a-half hour rain delay, Southeast and Arkansas finally took the field.

Southeast let a three-run lead get away in the sixth inning during game one and surrendered a one-run lead with two outs in the seventh inning during the nightcap.

Three of Southeast's five hits came via the long ball as the Redhawks held a 4-1 lead through five innings on the front end of the twin bill.

Claire Wernig's one-out solo home run quickly put Southeast ahead in the bottom of the first inning. The homer was the first of Wernig's career.

After Arkansas tied the game with a leadoff home run by Lauren Archuleta in the third, the Redhawks regained the lead in the fourth.

Savannah Carpenter led things off with a home run that cleared the wall in left center. The Redhawks loaded the bases after that when Haylee Krack was hit by a pitch, Riley Hayes singled to right and Danielle Turner walked. An ensuing walk by Brittany Stevens scored pinch-runner Deering, giving Southeast a 3-1 advantage.

One more home run, this time by Krack, widened the Redhawks lead to three runs in the fifth inning. For Krack, it was her team-high sixth round-tripper of the season.

Arkansas then had its way with Southeast when it sent 10 hitters to the plate in the top of the sixth.

Each of the first six hitters in the Razorbacks' lineup reached base and scored to grab Arkansas the lead for good.

Shelby Hiers drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by Tori Cooper. Rachel Box walked to quickly load the bases. Ashley Diaz knocked in both Hiers and Cooper on the next play, a single to center. Claire Clark kept things going with a single to right, bringing Box to tie the game. A one-out double by Parker Pocklington pushed across two more runs before Archuleta's sacrifice fly plated Autumn Russell, giving Arkansas a 7-4 lead.

The Redhawks had chances with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, but came up empty against reliever Grace Moll. Moll later retired Southeast in order during the seventh en route to her first save of the season.

Peyton Carter (1-3) was credited with her first win after giving up two hits and a run in two innings out of the bullpen.

Madeline Krumrey (5-7) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings. Krumrey struck out four and walked two, as well.

Arkansas outhit Southeast, 10-5, with Cooper, Diaz and Russell contributing two hits apiece.

Southeast was clinging to a 3-2 lead after six innings in game two when a Hiers reached on a two-base error to immediately get into scoring position. Third baseman Darby Pruett fielded Hiers' groundball, but overthrew first baseman Savannah Carpenter, allowing Hiers to advance to second.

With two outs and Hiers on third, Diaz belted a home run to right off reliever Mackenzie Hoelting as Arkansas pulled ahead, 4-3.

Southeast again went down quietly in the seventh as the Razorbacks completed their sweep.

Moll (10-19) went the distance, giving up seven hits and three runs. In addition, she recorded 11 strikeouts to just one walk.

Hoelting (0-4) took the loss, working just two-thirds of an inning in relief. She took over for starter Haley Thogmartin, who scattered five hits and gave up three runs, while striking out three and walking two in six innings.

Diaz finished at 2-for-4, while Clark and Russell added two hits, as well.

Hayes went 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI to lead the Redhawks.

Southeast returns to Ohio Valley Conference play when it hosts Jacksonville State in a 1 p.m., CT, doubleheader Saturday.
