CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (14-31, 8-15) scored a season-high 15 runs in the nightcap to force a doubleheader split with Austin Peay (8-35, 4-19) Friday at the Southeast Softball Complex.

Southeast, which held a 7-3 lead through three-and-a-half innings of game two, erupted for eight two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Sarah Messex ignited the late-inning rally when she walked with the bases loaded. Claire Wernig cleared the bases with an ensuing 3-RBI double to left enter. Harli Wheeler kept things going with a single and Wernig scored. Wheeler stole third and touched home on a single by Savannah Carpenter. Haylee Krack's two-run home run then widened the Redhawks lead to 15-4.

APSU managed to get two more runs when Niya Sparks hit her second home run of the game in the top of the fifth, but that was it.

Freshman Haley Thogmartin (9-9) evened her record, tossing five innings with three strikeouts.

Autumn Hanners (3-15) took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits and walking two in just 1.1 innings.

Southeast collected 13 hits in the nightcap, posting double-digit hits for the first time in nine games.

Wheeler went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, triple, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Carpenter, Krack and Wernig each contributed two hits and three RBIs. Danielle Turner had two hits, as well.

Krack, who hit her team-high eighth home run, now has 18 in her career.

APSU used a pair of home runs, including a grand slam by Danielle Liermann to upend Southeast in game one.

Down, 1-0, the Governors loaded the bases when Courtney Brower was hit by a pitch, Chandler Groves singled and Kacy Acree walked. Liermann then stepped in and cleared the bases with her smash to left center, putting APSU ahead 4-1.

Another home run, this time a two-run shot by Groves, pushed APSU's lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning.

The Govs tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth when Acree knocked in Erica Inagaki on a two-out single to right.

The Redhawks left seven runners on base and posed their bigges threat with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the third inning. Southeast, however, came up empty.

Natalie Ayala (2-10) allowed eight hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out two in her complete game victory.

Madeline Krumrey (5-13) suffered the loss. Krumrey gave up six runs on six hits, struck out two and walked one in 3.1 innings.

The top three hitters in APSU's lineup, consisting of Groves, Acree and Liermann combined for six hits, four runs and seven RBIs. The Govs outhit the Redhawks, 9-8.

Krack and Wernig posted two hits apiece to lead Southeast. Darby Pruett added a home run, her fourth of the season.

In all, there were nine home runs hit between Southeast (4) and APSU (5) in today's doubleheader, including six in game two.

Southeast honored seniors Carpenter and Krack prior to the twin bill.

The Redhawks and Governors wrap up their series at 10 a.m., CT, Saturday.
