Senior Day
Seniors
Savannah Carpenter and
Haylee Krack will be honored during a special presentation prior to Friday's doubleheader against Austin Peay. Carpenter and Krack suit up for their final Ohio Valley Conference games at the Southeast Softball Complex. Carpenter has played in 155 games and made 147 starts in her Southeast career. She owns a career batting average of .341 with 58 runs scored, 149 hits, 25 doubles, 16 home runs and 83 RBIs. Krack started 78 of the 82 games she played as a Redhawk. She scored 35 runs, notched 60 hits, 10 doubles, 17 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Missouri Doubleheader Cancelled
Southeast was scheduled to host #16 Missouri in a midweek doubleheader on Apr. 27. That twin bill, which was later moved to May 4 due to weather, will not be played. The Redhawks end the non-conference portion of this year's schedule with a 6-16 record.
Series History
Southeast leads its overall series against Austin Peay 65-20. The Redhawks swept APSU in a three-game series in Clarksville, Tennessee last season. Southeast locked down its 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament berth with its 8-1, 6-5, victories over the Lady Govs on May 2, 2015.
Back at Home
The Redhawks return home for the first time in two weeks. Southeast played its last nine games on the road with trips to Saint Louis (Apr. 13), UT Martin (Apr. 16-17), Eastern Kentucky (Apr. 23) and Morehead State (Apr. 24). The Redhawks went 1-8 during their longest road stretch this year. Southeast plays its final three home games this week when it faces Austin Peay in a three-game series starting Saturday.
Let's Turn Two
The Redhawks rank 11th in the nation in double plays per game. Southeast has turned 22 double plays (0.51 avg.) in 43 games this season, 12 more than it did a year ago (10). The last time the Redhawks had more than 20 double plays in a season was 2011 (31).
Countdown to 200
Southeast head coach
Mark Redburn is two wins away from getting 200 in his career. Redburn is currently 198-284 in 12 years as a head coach. He compiled 30 wins at Southeast (2015-present), 90 at Evansville (2010-2014), 49 at Jefferson College (2005-2006) and 27 at St. Charles Community College (2002-2004).
Thogmartin Wins
Freshman
Haley Thogmartin picked up her team-high eighth win of the season when she beat Eastern Kentucky in game two of a doubleheader on Apr. 23. Thogmartin scattered four hits and allowed two runs in 4.1 innings. She also struck out two. A day later, Thogmartin retired 12 of the first 13 hitters she faced and no-hit Morehead State for four innings before coming up on the short end of a 1-0 loss. This year marks the second-straight where Southeast has had a true freshman pitcher win eight or more games.
Pruett Notches Career-High
Darby Pruett established a new career-high with three RBIs in Southeast's 5-2 win over Eastern Kentucky on Apr. 23. Pruett hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning, her third round-tripper this season. It was the fourth time she had mutiple RBIs in a game this season.
Hoelting Gets the Save
Reliever
Mackenzie Hoelting limited Eastern Kentucky to just one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings to nail down her team-high second save on Apr. 23. Hoelting faced 10 hitters and tallied six ground ball outs. She made a relief appearance in each of Southeast's last three games.
Final Push
Southeast has six Ohio Valley Conference games remaining as it makes its final push for one of the eight spots in the league's postseason tournament. The Redhawks welcome Austin Peay for a three-game series this weekend. APSU is currently last in the OVC standings. Southeast then rounds out its regular-season schedule with a three-game series at Eastern Illinois on May 7-8. EIU, which heated up to win 10 of its last 11 contests, is third in the league at 19-24 and 13-6 in the OVC.
Starting Streak
Right fielder
Claire Wernig has started 49-consecutive games, currently the longest streak of any active player. Wernig and shortstop
Sarah Messex are the only two Redhawks who started every game in 2016. Wernig leads Southeast in at-bats (148), runs (26), hits (44) and multiple-hit games (14). She also held a career-long 12-game hitting streak from Mar. 20-Apr. 9, the first double-digit game hitting streak by a Redhawk since 2012 (Taylor Cowan).
Carpenter Leads Redhawks
Savannah Carpenter leads Southeast with a .299 batting average entering this week. Carpenter moves to first in that category after
Claire Wernig held the team's top batting average for six-straight weeks. She also leads the team in RBIs (27) and slugging percentage (.533). In addition, Carpenter is Southeast's top hitter in conference games only with a .364 clip in 21 starts.
Chasing 200
Pitcher
Madeline Krumrey is 26 strikeouts away from reaching 200 in her career. Krumrey has appeared in 58 games and made 47 starts, recording 174 strikeouts in 300.1 innings during her Southeast career. She also tossed a total of 19 complete games and two shutouts. Krumrey leads the Redhawks in strikeouts (80), appearances (26), starts (21), complete games (6), innings pitched (123.2), opposing batting average (.285) and ERA (3.45) this year. She ranks among Ohio Valley Conference leaders in strikeouts (9th, 40), innings pitched (9th, 64), games started (9th, 10) and complete games (t8th, 5) in league play alone.
30 Something
Southeast presently has 29 home runs and ranks fifth among Ohio Valley Conference leaders in that category. The Redhawks need just one more to reach 30 this year. Southeast has hit 30 or more home runs each of the last three years. Its 39 homers in 2015 were fourth-most in a season.
Krack Among Home Run Leaders
Haylee Krack's team-high seventh home run in the fifth inning of game one at Saint Louis (Apr. 13) placed her fifth all-time in career home runs at Southeast. Krack led the Redhawks with 10 home runs in 2014 before taking over that spot again this year. She has 17 round-trippers in her career. Michelle Summers (2006-08) owns the school record with 48 homers.
Young Bunch
Five of Southeast's nine starters are either freshmen or sophomores. Sophomores Claire Wernig (RF) and
Riley Hayes (C) have started 43 and 33 games, respectively this season, while freshmen
Brittany Stevens (LF) and
Sarah Messex (SS) made 38 and 43 starts. Meanwhile, freshman pitcher
Haley Thogmartin appeared in 22 games and made 15 starts in her rookie season. Wernig (2nd, .297), Hayes (3rd, .289) and Stevens (5th, .26) are among Southeast's top-five hitters through 43 games.
Among OVC Leaders
As a team, Southeast ranks among the top five Ohio Valley Conference leaders in slugging percentage (3rd, .396), on-base percentage (5th, .335), doubles (5th, 55), home runs (5th, 29), saves (t3rd, 3) and fewest walks allowed (3rd, 104). Individually,
Haylee Krack is tied for fifth among league leaders in home runs (7),
Sarah Messex is tied for fourth in walks (21) and
Mackenzie Hoelting is second in relief appearances (18).
