Redhawks Lose Twin Bill to Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Southeast Missouri (13-30, 7-14) was swept in a doubleheader by Morehead State (23-21, 10-9), 6-1, 1-0, Sunday at University Field

MSU capitalized on three Southeast errors to score three unearned runs and used a four-run third inning to get by the Redhawks in game one.

After Darby Pruett doubled home Brittany Stevens to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second, the Eagles put up four runs in the third and never looked back.

Dana Hutchins hit a solo home run to center field before MSU added three more runs with two outs. Hannah Murphy knocked in Robyn Leighton on a base hit to center. Lizzy Margagliotti and Lindsay Ward each reached on an error. Murphy and Ellen Barrett then scored to widen the Eagles lead to 5-1.

Another error came back to haunt Southeast in the bottom of the fifth inning. Karly Thompson got on courtesy of an error by third baseman Haylee Krack and came around to score on a Margagliotti single to make it 6-1.

Mackenzie Grossmann (8-13) picked up the win, allowing only one run in seven innings. Grossmann gave up seven hits, struck out six, walked one and tossed six scoreless frames.

Madeline Krumrey (5-12) fell to her 12th loss of the season. Krumrey worked 2.2 innings, striking out two and allowing four hits, five runs and three walks.

Abby Tillotson went 2-for-2 to lead the Redhawks, while Hutchins also had a pair of hits to pace the Eagles.

Thompson hit a leadoff home run in the fifth inning and Allison Rager threw a complete game shutout during a 1-0 victory for MSU in the nightcap.

The Eagles went without a hit for four innings before Thompson's big hit ended freshman Haley Thogmartin's no-hit bid. MSU had two of its three hits of the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Southeast, which left seven runners on base, had its chances in the fourth and sixth innings.

The Redhawks drew three walks and had the bases loaded when Rager got Sarah Messex to pop up to short halting the threat in the fourth.

Then, in the sixth, Savannah Carpenter walked and went to third on an ensuing double by Pruett. With two runners in scoring position and one out, Rager got out of the jam when she struck out Mackenzie Hoelting and forced Stevens to foul out.

In its final at-bat in the seventh, Southeast went down in order as Messex, Nicole Deering and Claire Wernig all flied out.

Rager (12-5) gave up four hits, struck out three and walked five in her complete game shutout.

Thogmartin (8-9) retired 12 of the first 13 hitters she faced as only one Eagle reached base against her in the first four innings. She recorded four strikeouts and allowed three hits in five innings.

Southeast outhit MSU in both games of today's doubleheader and has edged its opponent in the hit column four-straight games.

Harli Wheeler, Tillotson, Pruett and Deering each had a hit in game two.

The Redhawks, who have dropped 16 of their last 18 contests, return home to host No. 19 Missouri in a doubleheader on Apr. 27.
