Road Warriors
Southeast wraps up its lengthy nine-game road stretch at Eastern Kentucky (Apr. 23) and Morehead State (Apr. 24) this weekend. The Redhawks are looking to snap an 11-game losing streak away from home. Southeast last won a road game when it swept Jackson State, 10-1, 9-8, in a doubleheader on Mar. 15.
Twelve Games Left
The Redhawks have 12 games remaining on their 2016 regular-season schedule. Southeast, which opened Ohio Valley Conference play at 5-2, has dropped nine of its last 10 league games and fell to 10th in the conference standings. After this weekend, the Redhawks have six OVC games left, including a three-game home series vs. Austin Peay (Apr. 30-May 1) and three-game road series at Eastern Illinois (May 7-8).
Now's the Time
Southeast, which has lost five in a row and 13 of its last 14 contests, needs to gain some ground entering its final weeks of the 2016 season. It was at this time last year when the Redhawks heated up to win eight of their final 10 regular-season games en route to securing a berth in the eight-team Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Series History
The Redhawks are 36-30 all-time against Eastern Kentucky and 56-18 in their all-time series against Morehead State. Southeast split a doubleheader with EKU each of the last two seasons. MSU has won four of its last six meetings with Southeast.
One-Run Games
Southeast has been involved in 14 one-run games this season and is 3-11 in those matchups. The Redhawks have lost eight-straight one-run games, including six this month alone. Southeast scored two or less runs seven times in April.
Starting Streak
Claire Wernig has started 45-consecutive games, currently the longest of any active player. Wernig and shortstop
Sarah Messex are the only two Redhawks who started every game in 2016. Wernig leads Southeast in batting average (.313), at-bats (134), hits (42), runs (25) and multiple-hit contests (13). She also held a career-long 12-game hitting streak from Mar. 20-Apr. 9, the first double-digit game hitting streak by a Redhawk since 2012 (Taylor Cowan).
More on Wernig
Claire Wernig is in her sixth-straight week as Southeast's top hitter. Wernig is the only Redhawk hitting over .300 (.313) entering this weekend. She hit .286 in 41 games and 27 starts a year ago. Wernig ranks among the top 25 hitters in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Hayes Out This Weekend
Starting catcher
Riley Hayes is out this weekend due to concussion symptoms. Hayes was hit with a foul ball off her own bat during Southeast's series at UT Martin (Apr. 16-17). She did not practice all week. Hayes is currently second on the team in batting average (.289) through 37 games and 33 starts.
First Start at Catcher
Abby Tillotson figures to start at catcher in
Riley Hayes' absence this weekend. Tillotson made her first career start as Southeast's catcher in game two of the Redhawks doubleheader at Saint Louis (Apr. 13). Tillotson saw action in 20 games and started 13 this season. Her other starts were at third base (9) and designated player (3).
Krack Among Home Run Leaders
Haylee Krack's team-high seventh home run in the fifth inning of game one at Saint Louis (Apr. 13) placed her fifth all-time in career home runs at Southeast. Krack led the Redhawks with 10 home runs in 2014 before taking over that spot again this year. She has 17 round-trippers in her career. Michelle Summers (2006-08) owns the school record with 48 homers.
30 Something
Southeast presently has 26 home runs and ranks tied for fourth with Eastern Kentucky among Ohio Valley Conference leaders in that category. The Redhawks need four more to reach 30 this year. Southeast has hit 30 or more home runs each of the last three seasons. Its 39 homers in 2015 were fourth-most in a season.
This Weekend's Opponents
Eastern Kentucky is presently second in the Ohio Valley Conference standings with an overall record of 31-10 and 13-3 in league play. EKU, which has the most wins in the OVC this season, recently went over 30 wins with a doubleheader sweep of Miami (Ohio) Tuesday. The Colonels are second in the conference in hitting (.304) and top the OVC in both pitching (2.19 ERA) and fielding (.970 pct.). Meanwhile, Morehead State has dropped from third to eighth in the league standings over the last two weeks. The Golden Eagles have lost 10 of their last 13 games and hold a record of 20-20 and 7-8 in OVC play. EKU's Paige Murphy leads the conference with a .402 batting average, while MSU's Robyn Leighton is third with a .398 clip.
Let's Get a Win
Southeast is looking to end a five-game losing streak when it heads to Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State this weekend. The Redhawks went 0-5 a week ago, dropping a doubleheader at Saint Louis (Apr. 13) and a three-game series at UT Martin (Apr. 16-17). Southeast hit just .171 in three games against UTM and finished with a .210 batting average for the week.
Game 150
Savannah Carpenter played the 150th game of her Southeast career in game two of a doubleheader at UT Martin (Apr. 16). Carpenter boasts a career batting average of .339 with 56 runs scored, 145 hits, 25 doubles, a triple, 15 home runs and 81 RBIs in 151 games and 143 starts as a Redhawk. She leads Southeast with 25 RBIs and ranks third on the team with five home runs.
