EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southeast Missouri (11-16, 5-4) dropped a pair of one-run games to SIU Edwardsville (11-16, 5-4) Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Cougar Field.
Baylee Douglass allowed only one run on four hits and struck out eight in a complete game victory during game one.
Southeast trailed, 1-0, after three innings before tying the game on a double to left center by
Riley Hayes in the top of the fourth.
SIUE scored its decisive unearned run on a throwing error in the bottom half of that inning.
Douglass picked up the win, while
Madeline Krumrey (5-5) took the loss for the Redhawks. Krumrey went the distance, giving up two runs on five hits. She also struck out four and walked none.
Claire Wernig and Hayes each had two hits to lead Southeast. The Redhawks also committed three errors.
Amy Hunt had two of SIUE's five hits. Pinch-runner Page Clinton scored the Cougars' winning run.
In game two, Alyssa Heren's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference in another one-run victory for SIUE.
Heren went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, a triple and the game-winning RBI.
Down, 4-3, Southeast tied the game in the top of the sixth inning.
Nicole Deering's second hit of the season, a two-out single to center, knocked in
Sarah Messex.
Heren then launched her home run with two outs in the borrom fo the sixth to complete SIUE's doubleheader sweep.
Southeast went down in order during its final at-bat in the seventh.
Douglass (6-6) earned her second win of the day after allowing one hit in 2.1 relief innings.
Freshman
Haley Thogmartin (6-7) suffered the loss, her first in Ohio Valley Conference play this season. Thogmartin gave up four hits and a run in 2.2 innings out of the bullpen.
SIUE outhit, Southeast, 13-5, with 10 hits coming from the top of the Cougars lineup. Jordan LaFavre and Tess Eby followed close behind Heren with three hits apiece.
Wernig, Deering,
Savannah Carpenter, Hayes and
Haylee Krack each had a hit for the Redhawks.
Southeast and SIUE wrap up their series at 1 p.m., CT, Sunday.
