Redhawks Compete at Regionals This Weekend

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The Southeast Missouri gymnastics team will have three gymnasts competing in this weekend's NCAA Regional in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., CT, at the Coleman Coliseum on the campus of the University of Alabama.
Sophomore Alexis Brawner and junior Lauren Israel will compete in the all-around, while freshman McKinzie Jones will compete on floor.
"We're looking forward to an enjoyable weekend where our qualifiers can do what they're capable of," said head coach Kristi Ewasko. "My encouragement for them is to control what they can control and, ultimately, do what they do best. They each bring different strengths to their routines and abilities, so I'm looking forward to each of them shining in their own light."
Brawner assembled a tremendous 2016 season to earn a bid to the Regional to compete as an all-arounder. She posted 39 scores of 9.700 or better to go along with 17 event titles on her way to being named the Midwest Independent Conference Athlete of the Year. Brawner finished the year with the top Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) on vault (9.820) and in the all-around (38.945).
"Alexis is a really strong all-arounder, and Alabama has already been so welcoming to her needs. Her routines will hang strong with them as long as she competes the way we know she's capable of."
Israel was able to earn a bid in her final season with the Redhawks. She put together a stellar year with 26 scores of 9.700 or better and added seven event titles, while also leading the conference on bars with an RQS of 9.830. Israel will also compete as an all-arounder for a chance to earn a shot at Nationals.
"Lauren will rotate with Kentucky and should really stand out on bars and beam. With clean lines and big skills, Lauren can hang with the best on those two events."
Jones, who joined Southeast as a walk-on, positively impacted the team from the beginning. In her first ever collegiate meet, Jones won two event titles and was eventually named the MIC Specialist of the Week. She collected 22 scores of 9.700 or better and eight event titles. Jones, who led the conference on floor (9.855), will compete on the same event in Alabama.
"McKinzie is looking to go out and really compete on floor. She will probably be the last competitor of the competition because of the rotation draw, and I'm really excited to her give it her all. She has really strong tumbling and a beautiful dance, so I'm looking forward to her showing it off to the crowd!"
