Redhawks Drop 9-0 Decision to UMKC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Amber Grove threw a complete game one-hit shutout to lead UMKC (5-9) to a 9-0 win over Southeast Missouri (4-8) Sunday morning at the Cancer Awareness Tournament.

Grove no-hit Southeast for five innings and allowed her only hit -- a one-out single by Riley Hayes -- in the top of the second.

Ahead, 2-0, after pushing across one run in each of the second and fourth innings, UMKC blew the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Bri Sims led off with a double to left center and scored on an ensuing home run by Kendra Leach. A pair of Southeast errors resulted in five unearned runs after Abby Warkentine knocked in Alex Gale on an infield single and Katie Kelley hit a grand slam.

Grove, who also struck out five and walked four, improved to 4-3 this season.

Haley Thogmartin (2-5) took the loss, allowing nine runs (six unearned) and eight hits in 5.1 innings.

Warkentine, Sims, Leach and Kelley combined for seven hits, five runs, three home runs and eight RBIs.

The Redhawks were one-hit for the second time this year. Southeast also committed a season-high four errors.

Southeast concludes play at the Cancer Awareness Tournament against Saint Louis later today. Start time is 3 p.m., CT.
