Riley Hayes and
Sarah Messex each had two hits with a run scored and one RBI to lead Southeast Missouri (4-7) to a 6-3 win over Northern Illinois (8-5) Saturday at the Cancer Awareness Tournament.
Southeast picked up its third victory in four games, scoring a combined five runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Down, 2-1, entering the bottom of the fourth inning,
Brittany Stevens hit the first home run of her career to give the Redhawks a 3-2 edge. Hayes scored on Stevens' round-tripper which cleared the wall in right center with two outs.
A solo home run by Caitlyn Warren quickly brought the game to a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth inning.
Southeast then countered with three runs in the bottom half of that frame to put the Huskies away.
Messex belted her first career home run over the left field fence and
Chelsea Smith followed with a double.
Harli Wheeler walked and Wernig singled to center scoring
Nicole Deering who pinch ran for Smith. Wheeler later touched home on an error to complete the scoring.
Madeline Krumrey (2-1) picked up her second-straight win. Krumrey went the distance, allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings. She also struck out five and walked one.
Tara Thacker (1-4) suffered the loss. Thacker gave up seven hits and five runs in four innings.
Southeast finished with nine hits. Wernig, Hayes and Messex went 2-for-3. Three others, including Smith, Stevens and
Savannah Carpenter followed with a hit.
NIU registered six hits and committed three errors.
The Redhawks face UMKC (11 a.m.) and host Saint Louis (3 p.m.) during the final day of the Cancer Awareness Tournament Sunday.
