Redhawks Fall to Central Arkansas in Pitcher’s Duel, 1-0

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri baseball (5-5) came out on the losing end of a pitcher's duel in Saturday's game two against Central Arkansas (6-5). UCA plated the game's lone run in the top of the ninth inning to down Southeast, 1-0.

Right-handed pitcher Clay Chandler threw eight scoreless innings in his third start of the season. Chandler allowed just two hits while striking out 14 hitters and allowing zero walks. At one point, Chandler struck out eight-straight hitters. After three starts in a Redhawk uniform, Chandler's ERA on the season sits at a microscopic 0.41 in 22.0 innings of work.

Justin Murphy (0-1) made his second appearance in as many days on Saturday. Murphy entered in relief in the top of the ninth inning. A one-out double to left by Tyler Langley followed by a single to center off the bat of Ty Tice plated the game's lone run.

The Bears earned the shutout victory behind a complete shutout behind freshman starting pitcher Cody Davenport (2-0). Davenport worked all nine innings, allowed seven hits, struck out nine Redhawk batters, and forced Southeast to leave eight runners on base.

Trevor Ezell tallied the only multi-hit game for Southeast as he went 2-for-4 in the contest. Dan Holst extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Redhawks and Bears will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Robert Beltran (1-1) will toe the rubber for Southeast in the matchup.
